fuel gauge problem

I have 93 W 250 that had about 1/4 tank of fuel when I topped it off. After driving away the gauge dropped to nothing and the fuel light came on. I did park it on a side slope for a while after filling it. What are the mechanics of the gauge and wiring that would make this occur. I am using the trip odometer now to get an idea how much is left. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like your sending unit has gone South. Not too bad of a job to swap sending units. Just need to run fuel level really low so the tank is lighter when you drop it to access the sending unit on top. I think it was just under $60 for a new one from the dealer.

Thanks for the ideas. I have a flatbed so I may just lift that off and take a peek in there. I can loosen the screw collar but I don't have enough room to lift it out. Thanks again.
