I've never seen a fuel gauge die as quickly as mine did... It went from working perfectly to rock bottom... I'm assuming it's the sending unit since the fuel light came on at the same time. (I attribute its sudden demise to the fact that my wife borrowed the truck). I’ll probably drop the tank to replace the sending unit (those rumors of raising the bed sound a little tough, especially since I’ve got a gooseneck AND 5th wheel hitch). Any suggestions, comments, and recommendations for a source to purchase the new sending unit? (’97 Longbed, normal cab).

Many Thanks!

I changed the sending unit on my 95 last year. Bought a sender from morar4less for under $50. Ask for internet sales if you go there.

I lowered my tank using a makeshift rope sling on the front half of the tank and a floor jack on the back half. The two quick disconnect fittings at the top of the fuel tank module were easier to access and release if you lower the tank a few inches. I did have the factory manual which outlines the job and shows how to release the fittings. It is probably worth looking at a manual so you understand the fittings.

The job took about three hours, not as big a deal as many make out. Less time than a good was job.

I changed my sender this winter and like K51P stated it is easier if you drop the tank down a little before disconecting the lines. Making sure you know how to disconect the lines is key as i was stuck with the guess and test.
