Archived fuel gell problem on friends powerstroke

A friend just called me about his 98 power stroke. He parked it in the garage on Thur. nite. It went down to 3 deg. here that nite . Fri. morning it wouldn't start. He has had a torpedo heater on it all day today, said the garage was warmer than his house, but truck still won't start. He put NAPA 911 fuel cond. in it and took off the filter housing and put some in there. Can he crack the lines at the injectors to see if he is getting fuel there?

I think it still has something to do with the cold on thursday nite,anybody have any suggestions (other than buy a cummins)?

change the filter?? more likely water then fuel gel personally... the filter is probably plugged.

Can't crack the lines at the injectors since there aren't any (HUEI under the valve covers).



Is he sure it is fuel related? Has he checked the solenoid (relay) for the glow plugs? Need new glow plugs (also under the valve cover )? Good cam sensor?



The engines have a high pressure oil pump for the unit injectors. There is a pressure regulator for it.

I'd doubt it is gelling. Normal summer grade diesel has a gel point between 0 and 15 degrees. It starts "clouding" between 15 to 30 degrees. If you're running some kind of winter blend, the cloud point would be lower. What I'd recommend if it is gelled is to add two bottles of Power Service Dr ( I think that's what it's called) to 35 gallons of fuel. The problem is getting it to circulate into your system. I just can't see that being the problem if the garage was warmer than the house though. Good luck.

He got it going. Turns out , after he he changed the filter,the batteries were also low and it didn't crank long enough to refill the filter canister.

Also ,this truck doesn't have a block heater,Ford dealer said it was an option .

By the way, the truck is a 97 not a 98 like I thought.
