Hi, i bought my first 24 valve cummins today- mainly for the driveline (parts truck). The guy said the engine ran great, but after they changed the drivers side front fender there was only fuel on 3 cylinders. I ruled out any air leaks by hooking new rubber lines right onto the supply and return and into a container with diesel under the hood. Electric lift pump cycles good and lots of supply pressure. Problem is that the fuel seems to be flowing straight through the injection pump without any cranking. If the lift pump is on, fuel goes right through the injection pump. Is this pump broken inside? or can this be caused by an electrical problem. It seems to be only leaking through some of the outputs on the IP. Nor familiar with these pumps, but seems like the IP must be toast. Thanks for any help.

That could be normal. I recall priming my replacement VP44 by loosening some of the high pressure injection lines then I activated the lift pump and fuel did ooze out of some of the high pressure fittings. I was a little surprised by this too.

I would guess that if you rotated the VP44 by cranking the engine a little, fuel should ooze out of different high pressure fittings since the VP44’s internals would change position.

Good luck,

John L.

Stupid question,

Was it cold when they started it after the fender change???

Is the 3 cylinder cold idle feature enabled???

I see that you are located where it might be cold enough for that to activate.

Just a thought...

Mike. :)
