Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cant get it started

My fuel heater did have an overheated connector that was leaking. The plug was moist with fuel when I disconnected it.

Thank you Joe.

I now need the part numbers from Cummins or Chrysler for the heater and the two gaskets. I know it's Summer but i'd rather fix the heater now rather than in the freezing cold because the truck wouldn't start.

I also need information about the gaskets themselves for an intermediate fix.

The gasket that fits the pre filter was dry rotten and has visible cracks. The gasket on top of the fuel heater is a smaller diameter and keyed? I was in hopes I could swap it as a temporary solution but I don't believe this can be done. Any Ideas?

The truck ran as Predicted- 18psi idle (22 after engine warmed) and ran up to 32psi in highway speed driving. I drove 10 miles, shut down for 45 minutes at the parts house and made it 5 miles toward home and the fuel pressure became erattic again. It is however above 18psi. (sustains 18-23psi) I think the heating and cooling cycle failed the old gasket.

For future reference, the fitting that retains the fuel heater is 8mm rather than 10. I also need to know whether the pre filter needs to be torqued on or just hand tightened-as it has mouldings for hand assembly.

I now have hope that a solution is found. I just have to figure out how to get the gaskets.

Thanks to those of you who have helped me.

Fuel heater/pre filter assembly part numbers

Fuel supply line fitting grommet (Cummins) 3923194

Fuel Strainer (Mopar) 04762962 (Cummins) 3847102

screen kit (FleetGuard) 3845400-S

pre-filter O-ring (FleetGuard) 3834185-S

heater element (includes 3834185-S) (FleetGuard) 3907766-S

cable harness (FleetGuard) 3843722-S

These part numbers may be out of date, but if they are Cummins will be able to find current numbers. There may be a couple of variations of this thing so have the CPL and serial number of your engine when you go to Cummins. The gasket (o-ring) above the fuel heater is the same as the one below it on mine. The screen kit contains a O-ring. Just for information you might want to drill out the three rivets that hold the heater together and post some pictures of what it looks like inside.

Cummins Cumberland told me I had to buy the complete pre-filter/heater assembly for a little over $225. I'll be calling them with Joe's numbers Monday morning. Thanks again Joe.

I could try it for a winter. I've seen all too many tractors act pitiful from a cold morning, and here in Ky we almost always have about a week down into the teens and 20's. Went out to work one morning and it was 6*.

I have some other things to discuss too. Granted that my problem was fixed for that breif period: 1. The truck started instantly, not even one complete revolution on the starter. 2. The pressure on my gauge held even after shut down. It hasn't done that since my problems arose in March. Is that a normal characteristic to not have any drainback at all? I so hope this gasket fixes this. It runs well above what it was capable of before. More soot too. (I cranked the AFC when I slid the plate)

I'm going to go tomorrow evening and try to get the gasket at cummins. $225 is worthless for a fuel heater.

When I was in the army in '63, it was 34 below one morning in Paris, KY. Couldn't believe it.

Mom is from directly north of Paris. She has told of the Ohio river freezing over and vehicle being driven across.

So Joe, Does your fuel pressure stay up after shutdown? :) (topic drifting away)

I'll be getting gaskets tomorrow.
