Just changed oil with 4200 miles on it this time. Extra quart in pan and test came back 5% fuel in oil.

Dodge serviced the unit and cleaned the turbo and sensors, Stated that STAR said up to 5% fuel in oil is OK. Gave me a printout showing that I should not idle more than 6-8 % of total time on engine. Somehow I knew it would be my fault.

Still surges at roll-off on throttle (4th time to fix) updated the Transmission controller for that, said it improves rough shifting, not the problem I am having.

This is my forth and Last Cummins. This truck has under 8500 miles and has been in for service 4 times for the same surging, cel light, etc. . They never should have sold this system as poor as it is, especially considering that it isn't even required for another 2 years.

I don't understand how only 5% fuel in the oil could amount to an additional quart in the crankcase. 12 quarts multiplied by . 05 equals 0. 6 quarts. Could there also be issues with complete drain of all the oil during each oil change?

Hey Harvey... . we're at 38K with our 08 5500..... after reading a couple of threads like this we've checked the oil level every time the truck stops to unload cores and reload product... .

We've yet to see a higher oil level than normal and the driver says he's never felt it go through the re-gen... .

How are you doing with your truck... .

If the oil cap is not removed when they change the oil it will most likely leave some in the top of the engine. Most shops doing an oil change do not let it drain longer than a couple of minutes so it has a higher probability to happen there vs. at home.

To prove it check your oil. Then start truck and let it run for 30 seconds or so. Check the oil again immediately and it will be down. If your normal level is center of the "safe" marks, it will be off the stick. If normal is high end of "safe" it will be low on the stick. That is one reason why I don't get overly concerned when the oil level is above the "safe" area, because with the engine running it is well below the "safe" area, and most likely off the stick completely.

When the Service Manager told me I had 27% idle time and told me all was my fault, I just about came over the counter after him. He wouldn't back off-just ****** me off. I only drive this thing on for hwy trips. He was not working there last week when I went in for an oil change - the jerk. New guy was totally ok.

Mine is completely satisfactory. I wish it didn't have all the smog crap on it but Dodge and Cummins probably wanted that crap even less than I did. The truck has been troublefree for almost 27,000 miles.

I had a check engine light on for a week and 3000 miles about a month ago but it cleared itself without any procedures being performed.

No complaints.

UPDATE: After cleaning the Turbo etc. per the TSB I got the truck back minus 1/4 tank of fuel and it still surges. Today 426 miles later the CEL on again and back to Dodge for a turbo replacement. Turbos are backordered so no truck until next week...

Sorry to hear you 6. 7 troubles, plus a crappy dealership only compounds your frustration. Sounds to me like you have a injector problem.

Next Update..... New turbo installed, truck still surges and jerks. I guess that this just can't be fixed, Every time I go in to the dealer its 45 miles each way plus a day or two w/o truck. This will be the sixth time in for the same problem starting the third day I had the truck.

I guess the I am supposed to feel good thast it meets a federal standard that isn't even required yet.

gun fighter, surging sounds to me like you have an EGR problem. Also, I have some off forum advice if you are open to it shoot me an email.

Harvey, that is how I originally was thinking in terms of amount of fuel vs amount of oil, I had 4 and 5% fuel in oil, and I was getting 14. 5L of oil being drained when I am dead sure that only 11. 5L was being put in. It is most definitely not an incomplete drain issue. Dodge as usual was clueless, couldn't give me any sort of credible explanation, but the oil analysis engineer at Finning explained to me that a little bit of fuel, when mixed in with oil will dramatically increase the oil level, and that the additional 20% of volume I was seeing in my crankcase was about right for the 5% of fuel dilution in the oil.
