Well, it broke. I was heading out on a chore and she just shut down, no warning. I was lucky to get it off the road, very hard to turn, but she's home now and waiting for me to fix her.

P1688 is the code she threw, I knew it before I checked. Classic fuel injector shutdown!

Now I need to find the best pump to replace the old one. I haven't searched to see what the other business's offer, but I would like to get her running ASAP. it's not a business truck, but I hate driving my wife's car or my daughter's car.

Would y'all changed out the OEM injectors? They prolly need it too. She has over 155,000 miles.

Had to laugh at my brother he said. You don't have a spare? I said, most people don't carry a spare injector pump. :-laf

I have passed this on countless times, I cannot say enough good about Blue Chip Diesel, Chip really knows what he says and does with the VP 44!! I am still running the stock injectors with 196K and put Chip's one above stock model VP44 on my 99 at 160K when the origional failed. His instructions are flawless and to the point and start to finish 3 hrs and as he suggests you only have to remove the front 3 injector lines at the head to remove the pump. Go on his site and take a look!

I just looked at his web site. And yes, I have almost made up my mind that this is the way to go. I have beening reading posts since I posted my thread. I read Sticks post about changing out the VP44. Very detailed, thanks Sticks! It gives you an idea of what to expect in tackling the VP44.

I am pretty sure I will go with the Special X version. I plan on keeping this truck. I just like driving MY truck. It fits me and I fit her... . lol

Well, she is fixed! Spent one afternoon tearing it down and spent this morning putting it all together. She fired up at 13:00.

I went with Blue Chip VP44 X15 since I already had a PE EZ on my truck. Everything went smooth and bleeding the lines according to the instructions were flawless.

Thanks for the nudge gtwitch...

Can't say enough thanks to Chip at Blue Chips Diesel!

My pump just died two days ago at 160,00. I have looked all over the web. I looked at Chips also. I have found stock rebuilt pumps as low as 975 dollars. Is the upgrade worth the difference? I have read opinions both ways. Some say definitely upgrade for performance and others say it makes little to no difference on an upgraded model. My try truck has Diesel Dynamics DD II Injectors (installed at 60k miles), DD True Torque Power Module (30k), DD 4” exhaust with dual muffler (40k).
The existing pump was stock. I installed an Air Dog filter and pump system on it about a year ago. I really don't want to fork out the extra unless it really does give the extra MPG and a little more performance. I guess like everyone else, money is tight. Thanks in advance for your input. My truck is a 99 4x4 with extended cab and automatic transmission.

I will say that I have installed well over 1k vp-44s over my time. I have never had an early death of any that I have installed. I have never spent the extra money for a blue chip pump. In the early days all the pumps came through the oem parts channel till about 08 when their pricing went crazy, now they are coming from bosch dealers.

Hello
I went with the Blue Chip Also. Yes I paid much more But I also got a 2 year UNLIMITED Mileage Warrenty. The others only offered a 6 to 12 month warrenty and a limited mileage warrenty I have already put 7500 miles on the truck since the repair in January 2013.

There are companies out there that are selling injection pumps with used computers. They do not advertise that part and you will never know what your getting unless you call and specifically ask them. I have a friend that just bought a vp44 he was about to pull the trigger through a big name performance company until he called and talked to them (I wont name who they are on a public forum) They admitted that as long as they pass a bench test they will sell a rebuilt pump with used electronics. So essentially you are getting someone elses computer with unknown mileage. I believe the majority of the mechanical issues have been greatly improved but the computers still account for a large portion of vp failures. I bought a Blue Chip pump and have been satisfied with it to date. the big reason for me at the time was the customer support behind the pump. I was having some electrical issues with my former 00 truck and could not figure it out nor could I find anyone locally to help. This was also before I came across TDR. Out of desperation, I called up Chip and not only did he help me work through my problems that day but he called me back a few days later to see how my truck was running. He never made a dime off me but was happy to help me out. I respected him alot for that and a few years later when it came time for a vp for my current truck I went back to him. Are they superior pumps to everyone elses? I really cant say that, but I would say Bobs post from earlier speaks volumes. Maybe we should be asking where he gets his stuff from ;)
