I had my service engine light come on a fews days ago. Stayed on about a day and a half then went off. I brought it into the dealer and he put it on the diagnostic machine. Said one of the fuel injection sensors had gone off for some reason but was ok now. I asked if they had many problems with the fuel injection pumps on the new Dodge trucks and he said they have had a lot of problems with them and have replaced a number of them at about $3000 a pop. He mentioned to me the old mechanical ones were a lot more reliable and rarely gave any trouble. I'm thinking about dumping my 2001. 5 and getting an older 1997 model with a five speed manual transmission and no computer. Wondering how many people out there have had problems with fuel injection pumps or computers going bad on their late model Dodge truck?

Thanks.

Steve, if you do a search under fuel injection pump or lift pump, you will see that the problem is still present. Most of us that have HP mods are monitoring FP as the stock lift pump and it's placement foward of the tank near the engine are not good. What's happening with non-bombed trucks is that the lift pump either quits or dies a slow death (more likely the latter) and eventually takes the VP44 injection pump out with it due to lack of lubrication. Bombed trucks with bad lift pumps will bring on the failure sooner as they are asking for more fuel that the failing transfer (lift) pump cannot accomodate.

I have an '01 and have had a few failures of lift pumps, the OEM went first and then the aftermarket pump went second. I'm not ready to trade in for a used 12V yet, though I sure would love to own one as a second rig if $$$ allowed. If you are staying stock and until the warranty expires, at least they will replace the pump if it fails. If you have added fueling mods. and have lost the warranty, monitoring your FP will help to prolong the life of the injection pump.
