(posted this on 1st. gen. also, by mistake. . Oh Well)
Old 97 has been smelling like raw fuel lately, I thought it might be the old "return line" problem, started to notice fuel wetness around the starter. Closer investigation revealed fuel coming out the end of the lift pump under the rubber plunger cap. I pulled the cap off, and pumped it a few times, and a drop or two of fuel ran out with each pump. Are these rebuildable?, Is there a seal kit for these, or they a "throw away"? This is leaking quite a bid with the engine runnig, and the trans, & cross members are wet with fuel. any ideas before I tear into it?... ... DDG

I ask Cummins about the lift pump, it is warranteed for 100K miles, how many do you have on her??

I've got 87,000 miles on it, and thought about the 100k warranty, but thought it was limited basically to the block, head & maybe the injector pump. I thought all the bolted on stuff was not actually considered part of the engine. I would like to hear for sure if the lift pump is covered, it would sure make life easier for the Garrett's with Christmas coming & all. I'd sure hate to have to skip X-mas just for a new pump. Dodge in Lawrence wants about $200, Cummins Mid-America in KC wants about $130 INSTALLED!... ... ... ... (in a box, on the front seat)

At about 65K my lift pump started leaking out of the weep hole. Its a small hole drilled into the left side of the pump. Similar to a water pump weep hole. If it starts leaking it time to change it. Dodge dealer changed it N/C under the 100K engine warranty #ad

The lift pump is a warranty item. You'll also be happy to know that they are on about their third revision since 98 and that supposedly this latest is supposed to be a pretty good one. My 98 had to have the lift pump replace at about 200 miles. They were machined with tolerances to tight and sounded like a belt slipping and chirping. Good luck. Alan

Not to get off subject here, but are the weep holes located in the same place on the 24 valve engine. I've yet to find that damn water pump weephole, even though I've damn near put a permanent crick in my neck trying to find it from underneath. I didn't know the lift pump had one on it. I'll have to crawl under the truck and look around tonight. Damn the bad luck #ad

Woops, Sorry John. I`m not sure if our Cummins water pumps have weep holes. I don`t think they do. I was refering automotive waterpumps in general. #ad

My owners manual says to check the weep hole every fuel filter change. . ? I think, not in front of me now.

My 97 has one. My friend's 95 has one. It's easier to feel it from the top. With the engine shut off(legal disclaimer)run your hand down under the housing and you can feel the hole on the bottom of the housing directly below the pump shaft. I usally check it at each oil change to see if it is leaking coolant.

I also keep a piece of clean cardboard on the concrete shop floor under my vehicles(started that with my first 84 Ford diesel) to catch any drips of fluids(no blow by bottle) and can see if anything is leaking when I crank up and back out. I visually check the cardboard when lowering the door.

Well that would be good if the water pump on the 99's don't have a weep hole. That would explain why I can't find it. Thing is, the maintenance chart in the owner's manual says to inspect the water pump weep hole at 30K (I think this is the correct mileage). I'll keep looking.

About the lift pump, I checked the owners/warranty book about the 100k warranty, and what was covered & not covered, and was dissapointed to see that the lift pump is NOT covered. I called a local dealer, and he told me the same thing. I drove over to KC, and just of the hell of it, stopped at a dealer there, and they told me it IS covered!. They asked the shop manager, he agreed "if it's bolted to the engine, it's covered". So, guess what, I have an appointment to get it changed tues, and left before they could change their minds!... ..... DDG

Unbelievable how some of the Dodge dealers make up there own rules on whats covered and whats not covered!

Glad to hear you found a good dealer #ad
