I have a 2003 2500 6 speed while fueling I had fuel come out the top of the tank where the white ring with the two hose are when it got full,I can't tell where it is comming from but stops when I stop fueling. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Are you saying that the tank is full, and if you add more fuel it runs out from around the pickup assembly retaining ring?

If so, why would you want to continue adding fuel to a full tank?

Or is the tank near empty, but adding fuel just pours out the top of the tank? If so, that's a new one on me. I suppose it could run out either the aforementioned retaining ring or the front/rear tank vents, although it seems like that would defy gravity.

I had the same problem a few months ago, when I was fueling I noticed a puddle of fuel under the truck. I was not trying to squeeze more than the tank would hold just filling up. I got home and put a little pressure into the fill neck and that is how I found the leaking fitting, on closer inspection the rubber plug on one of the fittings had dry rotted. Found a rubber plug in my toolbox and problem fixed.

If you have to remove the tank, do the vent modification while you're at it and get another 3-4 gallons on board when you fill up.

Ryan, when I would fill the tank and it would shut off I would add some more to make sure it was full that's when it would run out, it is probably the the rubber plug like SWithrow said. thanks for your reply.

After checking for the rotted plug, I would tighten the white "jar lid" a bit - it's not uncommon for them to be loose.

No, It is a tight fit but if you take your time you can do it. Took me about 15 minutes to work the new plug and clamp onto the fitting. A small flashligt will help you see the fitting

Did my modification 6 years ago - best thing I've done. Only 1 time has the filler ever clicked off before the tank was full. The extra 3-4 gals is a real plus.

Sounds like you had the same problem I had. At first I thought it was because of a rubber host barb cap rotting, so I went to the dealer and they gave me a couple of caps for free. It didn't fix the problem so I crawled under the truck and checked the white ring and found it to be loose. I was originally mistaken in thinking that it was a one piece "lid" on the tank. It's more like the two part lid for a Mason jar in that there is a center piece and the outer threaded ring. That ring turned out to be loose and when I hand tightened it the problem was solved. Here's the thread I started a while back:

Don't try to reach it from the passenger side of the tank. There is a heat shield there that blocks access. I crawled under the truck on the driver's side, forward of the fuel tank access on the side wall of the bed, then worked myself into position to reach the ring by putting my head up in the side wall of the bed. Hand tightening worked for me, but if you have a strap wrench you could snug it down real nice. I haven't had any leakage since I tightened the ring.

Thanks Crunch, I'll be sure and check that for sure
