Fuel Leak

When filling the fuel tank on my 1993 beast, I have filled it FULL once. When I did, it LEAKED at the top of the tank. There is a big round thing on the top of the tank, where the tank filler tube, and vent tube, and probably the fuel pick-up tubes run into the tank.



I know you are really not supposed to over fill GAS engines, as it interferes with the charcoal canister, which is hooked to the vent system. :{



But a Diesel?



I wanted to do a mileage check. From topped off tank, to topped off tank full. That is why I did it. Oo.



Now I'm thinking I should look deeper, and perhaps drop the tank, and replace the top of tank seal. What's your take on this?



BTW, I have had minivan tanks off, and replaced fuel level sensors etc.

Your tank shouldn't leak no matter how full it is. If it is leaking from the big round seal, replace it. Instead of dropping the tank, you might try unbolting the bed and moving it back. It's easy to remove the bed (if you have help or a lift) and it doesn't matter if the tank is full or empty.

Reach under and try tightening the big ring first. There is a big rubber seal under there. I had my tank off last year and that seal was still in very good shape. My dealer told me they had never had one go bad. Chances are, if you tighten it, you will stop your leak. BUT, keep in mind that the assembly is plastic and if you hit the fuel lines a little hard, you could easily break one off. I know that from experience, hence wh I had my ring off. It's fast, it's easy and it will likely fix your problem. That being said, you may already have a broken line. There should be three on the "fuel pump" assembly (that is what the part is called that goes in the tank. )

I vote for tank removal, too. Lemme know when you plan to do it, and I'll even help. I had a 91 with an aftermarket tank that leaked if I got it too full. Fuel gauge didnt work, either- went from 3/4 at fillup to about 1/2, and stayed there till it ran out of fuel. So I just figured 20mpg (it got more like 23 most of the time), and filled it up when I got to about 450mi.
