I just finished repairing a leak on my 2001 tank like you describe. Most of the liquid was coming from the top of the white canister module that fits into the top of the tank. This module has the pickup and return lines, the sending unit connector and the vent all in the top.
My conclusion was that the plastic lines and their quick disconnect were leaking, but it could have been the vent assembly. I cut the plastic lines off and replaced them with rubber hose and worm drive hose clamps. No leaks so far.
I installed a new module and gasket. If you want to work on this and it is the same as the 2001, it is easier to take the bed off than to drop the tank. Honest!!
Be careful removing the sending unit connector. It has a tab that you must push down to release it after removing a red safety tab. Use some DC4 or other dielectric grease when reassembling.
Also, when you are reinstalling the cannister module, the big plastic nut will not tighten down to prevent a leak. You must seat the module down by holding it tightly into the tank while the nut is tightened. Otherwise you will get a leak.
This is not an easy job.
