I have a 1998 and there is a fuel leak comming from the engine side of the fuel filter. It looks like it is a line that goes into the engine. I was hopeing it was the fuel filter but it is not. Anyone with a idea please let me know.
 
Which hose?... . is the steel line from the top of the filter to the Injector pump or the rubber line under the pump?If its the steel line and its leaking between the banjo fittings time for a new line... . if its leaking on the ends just put new gaskets in... ... the return line seems to be a comman problem thats just a piece of rubber hose not sure on the size though I think 3/8... ... . Rick
 
Just did mine last Saturday

I had a leak in the steel return line from the overflow valve on the injection pump. The line came out in two pieces after I took the banjo bolt out and unbolted the hold-down tabs. :eek: (I'm not saying that it was completely broken before I removed it, but while wiggling it to try to snake it out it broke in two. )



Of course I replaced the rubber section of the return line too. I bought 2ft. of the hose and even though it only required about 8 in. to span the gap between the two steel lines I used the whole 2ft. and left a loop in the hose.



This way I could unbolt the two tabs that attach the steel return line that goes down to the tank, move it into a more convenient position for attaching the rubber hose to it and tightening the worm-screw clamp, then tuck the loop of hose behind the fuel filter and reattach the mounting tabs for the tank return line.

I thought it was easier to change from the bottom on mine. But then again im 6'4 with spaghetti arms. Dropped the front driveshaft, removed starter (had silver plated contacts put in) then reach up in.

I was going to post a reminder to people about this line. Mine totally blew going to work one morning. Man what a mess. I used 1/4 tank of fuel to go to work and home (28 miles total). Had fuel all underneath, up the tailgate and rear window. Pressure washed and it still has the garage smelling like #2 (not that its a bad thing):D

At 130,000 miles the return line was cracked so bad it broke in half when I would bend it.

Hummin Cummins, you must have some really long arms!!:eek: I did it from the top - removed the intercooler tube and the intake air horn and the fuel filter canister.
 
I changed my fuel hoses last fall and found that from the bottom was the only way. Unbolted the master cylinder and pulled over to the side with baling twine (only really necessary if you have a vacuum booster). Took the starter off (to replace contacts in the mean time). Then worked on the fuel lines.



The general suggestion is to use the marine diesel hose available at boat shops. Not expensive and it's fire resistant and will last much longer. Get bigger clamps.



I had the little leak down the side of the engine and this stopped it.
