I noticed a diesel fuel smell coming from my air vents inside the truck. I stopped the truck and checked under the hood. Oil level was normal. Truck was running ok. I noticed a few drops of fluid on the front sway bar and a drop on the ecm mounting bolts. The top of the engine is dry, It appears to be coming from the power steering/cp3 pump area. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be. It had a small leak at 30,000 miles that stopped by
itself and has been fine until now. I now have 115,000 miles on it and the entire underside of the truck is starting to drip. Ironically I don't see a noticeable decline in mileage. I have had the truck throw two codes intermittently. It would violently stumble as if the switch were turned off while
going down the road. Check engine light would come on, along with the chime.
Truck would immediately straighten up and give no other symptoms. I will have to look up what the code were. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

I would look closer at the cp3 pump. Check the control actuator, the lines and banjo bolts closely for any leaks

The lines and banjo bolts are dry. It appears to be between the cp3 and the block, but I can't see up in there too well. (Just lying under the truck with a flashlight. )

Clean up the area with cleaner. Then get some one to start the motor and rev it to 2k and look for a leak between the 2 halves of the cp3 pump.

That's what mine was and same exact area, helped the tech at the dealership ID the issue.

Thanks!, I have already cleaned the area some, but need to do more.

Did they have to replace the CP3 or was it repairable.

I just changed out a cp3 that had lost some bolts that hold it together,it was leaking for a while before it was addressed. It eventually quit running, than it was towed to me.

could be your fuel filter water seperator plunger. look at the bottom side for fuel. if wet then start engine and push up on the plunger a few times. fuel will dump out but might get it to seat better. I have had this happen a few times and need to find a plug that will thread into the bottom of the filter. Here in FL. I really don't need to have that flush plunger.

There is a TSB on leaking CP3s... mine was replaced under warranty (2004. 5 600CTD). It might appear to leak out of the wiring harness connected to the CP3...

On a side note, I find it funny how these issues come up and are addressed under TSBs years ago; and then resurface and everyone has forgotten about them!!

Thanks Steve; I will go check out the TSB's. Even though I am out of warranty, it might help point them at the problem. It does appear to be wet around the wiring harness, but I thought the fan had just blown it back onto the harness.

Just had my pump replaced under warranty. The fuel was dripping from the wire loom that runs under the pump. It was coming between the two halves. Sounds identical. Tech said it was cheaper to replace pump than to repair... ...

Thats the normal "CP-3 leak in the cold" problem. Replacing the pump generally doesn't fix it either.

There are 6-8 o-rings and 2 seals in the pump that can be replaced if you are adventurous and handy. The pump is relatively simple.

Replacing the pump has kept mine from leaking the last 140k... ??

Your one of the lucky ones. :D

I and lots of others had them replaced for leaking early on and they started leaking again the next time the weather got cold. The last I heard form the dealer they won't replace it just for leaking anymore unless there are other definite problems.

The pump consists of an aluminum pieces sandwiched between cast pieces and less than adequate sized o-rings. Its no wonder they leak in temp differentials. A guy on another forum actually took one apart and sourced some larger o-rings that stopped his leaking problems.

A lot cheaper than a rebuilt pump if you don't need it. ;)

I was told it was an updated part at the time... this was early 05...

I got one in early 06. About the only difference was an updated part #. Still leaked the next time it got cold.

Since it was impossible to get a new pump at that time, am firmly convinced all they were doing was replacing them with remans and calling it an upgrade. An S appended to the part # was the extent of the upgrade. :-laf

i just took my truck in because it was weeping in between the two halfs they told me that it had to be spraying or dripping and by dripping they ment every few seconds. they said star wont replace them when there weeping. every 200 to 500 miles minei s soaking wet.

Is there a gasket/ o ring kit that will fix it or should i just buy the gaskets from dodge and do it my self and wait tell it leaks again and start the process all over again cuz everthing ive had fixed from dodge is just like putting a bandage over it and they hope it will last tell the warrenty runs out like ball joints steering problems and so on. also how hard is it to brake it down and put it back together.

These parts will reseal the pump with slightly larger than stock o-rings of supposedly better material than OEM.

1- 25x36x7 harwal seal this is stock size

1-25x37x7 harwal seal this is stock size

1-2. 50x54. 00 ame o-ring this is 1mm thicher then stock

6-2. 00x7. 00 ame o-rings these are 1mm thicker then stock

1-2. 00x67. 00 ame o-ring this is stock size

A break down is a bit tougher. Though I had one and cannot find it now. I will look again and see if I stashed it

thanks ive been sweating this pump leaking im going hunting in jan and we run about 1600 to 1800 miles and i didnt want it to brake down. if u do come a cross the brake down send it my way im going to look and see if i can find one.
