My fuel filter housing has developed a small leak around the grommet that the fuel heater wires go through. After some searching TDR I gather that this isn't replaceable other than a whole new housing. So, if I've got to get a new housing I'd like to upgrade to one of the '01 and later ones. Anyone know the best place to pick up a newer style housing? If I call Cummins my engine serial number won't match up to the new ones, so does anyone have the part number? What other solutions have people come up with for this problem?

Awesome, sent you a reply.

Another question about this. I also noticed that the red wire has the insulation pulled back just a little on it. Since it's the middle of fall here in Wisconsin, mornings and usually afternoons are getting cold enough to turn the heater on. So, I'd rather not burn my truck down, I unplugged the heater for now. I'm assuming that won't hurt anything, as long as we don't get into 0deg. type weather before I fix it, right?

Your setup is pretty sweet, smitty, but I think I'd like to keep the WIF sensor and heater in the filter. I'll probably end up upgrading to a big line kit with this (since I'm probably changing the filter housing anyway). I know I've read that Dode/Cummins make a kit to mount the '01+ filter on these older trucks, anyone know if that can be purchased without a filter housing? I've heard the prices are scary on the kit with housing. Anyone have pictures of what they've done to mount the newer filter housing in these trucks?

Lose it. You do not need it. I took mine off two years ago. The heater is useless.

I agree. The heater activates after low 30 some degrees I think. I treat my tanks of fuel in winter and dont worry about Geling. I went with the setup I have so every once in a while I give the FLeetguard valve on the bottom of a filter and twist just to make sure not water has seperated.

"to each there own"

I've got the same problem on our '99 work truck. I talked to a dealer today who told me that they could punch the heater fitting out and replace with a freeze plug. Not sure how well this will work, but it's better than the $1000 they want for a new filter housing. Any other ideas on this?

Not sure what the 98. 5 - 99 filter housing look like compared to my 02 but mine is replaceable. You can buy the heater element and the thermostat that goes through the housing and plugs into the heater. I called the dealer about this and they told me I would have to buy a new housing. I ended up going through Hoesli diesel for the parts. In my experience the dealerships don't know the in's and out's of these trucks. They just do maintenance and standard repairs. Your best source for info is other enthusiasts and specialty shops.
