Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fuel line

On a 12 valve cummins, Is there a purpose of the metal return fuel line to have a few "S" curves in it in the section above the starter? between the quick disconnect and the hose connection? Can this be shortened some?.

I'm sure it had to do with clearing components. Lots of guys are running hose from end to end with little to no metal tubing, other than the pressure lines between the pump and the filter and the filter to the IP.
