2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Another Clunk Story

Does anybody know where the supply line and return line are located in the fuel tank? Does the return line come in at the top of the tank and stop, or does it have a down-tube? If it does have a down tube, how far does it extend down? I assume the supply line lays in the bottom of the tank. Where do each of these lines first attach to the engine, after transferring to rubber hoses? Would it be on the front side or the back side of the lift pump? I had a real strange fuel problem that we had to get straightened out, and now I have to return to my mechanic and try to convince him that the mistake happened on his end. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You need a service manual. Without one you are at the mercy of a mechanic who may or may not know squat about your truck.

The fuel lines in the tank are in a fuel module. This module also contains the fuel pump on gasoline applications. It does not on a diesel. The fuel pickup in the module picks up fuel from the bottom of the tank. The lines from the tank go to the fuel hoses which are nice and handy behind the starter and fuel filter. The steel line from the fuel supply hose goes to a fitting on top of the fuel heater/pre-filter assembly. From there is goes thru a short curved hose to the lift pump. Then to the fuel filter and on to the injection pump. The steel return line goes from the injection pump over flow valve to the return fuel hose.

My truck engine just stopped like it was getting no fuel. Another mechanic found that the two fuel lines were reversed, so the truck wouldn't run if the tank wasn't full. He also found "gunk" in the filters from the fuel being stirred up in the tank by the fuel coming in through the outlet line at the bottom of the tank.

Run from that so called mechanic. If the two fuel lines were reversed it would not have run right before this problem. It would be hard to reverse them anyway because they are different sizes at the top of the fuel module. If gunk was the problem it would have showed up as running poor quite a while before it stopped.

You probably have a bad air leak caused by a bad fuel hose. If the hoses have not been changed you need to do that. Get the good ones from http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm . In spite of what parts guys and some mechanics say the fuel hoses sold in parts houses won't last very long with diesel. You need good diesel rated hose.

You could also had some other air leak problem happen. The fuel heater may have burned up and caused such a bad air leak that it killed the engine.

I can't help too much because you are too far away for me to get my hands on your truck.
