Hello,

I know I'm driving my truck in the worst possible way (all city) but the mileage is worse than I thought it would be. I could get around 17 mpg (city) when the truck was new but now I only get around 14 mpg (calculated). I thought my BOMBS would help mileage but it seems to be worse. Anything I should check to find out why it's so low or is this what I should expect? The truck has 4000 miles on it now.

Thanks,

fuel mileage

The poor mileage could be due the fact that you are using

winterized fuel now instead of straight #2 diesel. I lost about

2 or 2 1/2 mpg when the stations here switched to winter fuel.

I think that the EZ hurts the city mileage too, because it is adding more fuel in the low rpm range quicker than it would stock. Alot more stop and go=more time accelerating.

Ray:

Us 12V folks probably don't know to much about your 24V rocket. Most all we know about is just puttering around in 12V clonkers. ;)

I'll second the winter fuel thought!

I lost around the same-between 2 and 2. 5 mpg as the fuel started getting lighter. Power has dropped off too. Can't wait for spring to come and the fuel to heavy-up again!

Winter fuel will do some damage to the mileage, add a good additive to help offset the winter fuel. I see no mileage gain in the summer with fuel additive (I use power service, $2 a quart and easy to find) but with the winter fuel I get about 10% better mileage with it. The EZ will definately hurt fuel economy too if driven aggressivley. The other thing to keep in mind is all the lubes and coolant in the truck need to warm up this time of year and the only source of heat to warm them is fuel, directly or indirectly. Changing to good quality synthetic gear lubes will help gain some economy back too. Hope this helps.

guys

fill up at the local truck stops if you have one. they will have straight #2 all year, just add a good additive. i use stanadyne performance and it lower the gel point by 30 or 40 degrees.

More MPGs.

Ray, try putting a 4 in 2X4 between the fuel pedal and floorboard, this should help quite a bit. hehehe :D :D

Change EZ Jumper.........

Put it on level one or two. Cut's back fueling at lower boost. That should help around the city and still give you power when you really need it. WOT!!

Garrett

Thanks

I'll try the recommendations. I've really been driving easily to try and get the mileage up but it's not working. I'll try moving the EZ jumper next. If that doesn't work, I'm trying the 2X4. :D :D

Thanks guys

Forgot to mention, I get all my fuel at Flying J. Do they use blended fuel or is it #2 all year long?

Broke down and shifted my jumper yesterday!

Moved 'er to the middle spot yesterday while I was servicing my truck. It'll be interesting to see what it makes for difference in mileage. I was sick and tired of spinning the tires every time I shifted with the snow on the ground. By spring I'll be running a COMP-won't that make "adjustments" so much easier!

You should live up here in Alaska, I have had it in 4X4 since Oct 15th and we have had winter fuel since the end of Sept. I get about 12. 5 mpg in town and 14 if I am lucky on the highway. Hook my snowmachine tralier up and its 12. 5 all the way around. I don't think my mods help the mileage and I know my foot has alot to do with it. The other factor is warm up time, I have a high idle and like a warm truck.

Ray, they only blend the fuel in the cold months. The percent #1 and the date they switch over is dependent on your geographical location. I'd guess Lewiston is about mid Oct - March for winter fuel. One thing to be aware of is if an abnormal outbreak of artic air is forecasted for your area, the fuel at the pumps may not be blended for the lower than normal temps and it might be wise to use an additive so your fuel won't gel. Artic cold fronts usually move slowly and are predicted far in advance.

Break-in, Ray

Ray,

I'm a lowly ol' 12-valver, too, so take this for what it's worth. But when I mentioned the mileage I was getting in mine (bought it used last summer - a '98 with only 45K miles on it) to the guy the Cummins shop, he said these things don't really break in for 60K miles. That's when the mileage is set.

I'm like you, drive it mostly around town. He said I should drive it as hard as I can once a month to McCall and back just to excersize it and keep the carbon build up cleared out. Wish I had the time to do so!

The point is, give it time, run it hard, and don't get to worried when you can only get #1 fuel.
