I know its been talked about before but I am disappointed.

Therefore, those with 24valve 3500 auto 4x4 3. 55lsd please tell me your mileage on the road.
This past weekend, I put 1k miles on my truck (now 3150) 98% interstate 2000 rpm (~72. 5mph) and got a whopping 14 mpg (the old fashion way). Will this get better.

Thanks
Tom

it should , my 2500 got about that when new , but i had to add [censored] to get it to finally break 20mpg while travlin at 75- 80 mph , now i have a voided warranty ... #ad

still looking for the smiley flippin' DC and Cummins the bird !!

I have 7000 miles on mine i have a 6 speed with a 4:10 rear end I never tow anything the best I ever got was 17 mpg that was on the interstate at 70 mpr.
I average out at 15. 5 mpg.
When the truck was new i drove it home from the dealer at a big 7 mpg.

kilgore, i've got the same rig practically, and backing off the smoke pedal to around 65 will get you at least 1mpg more, easy...

I hate it for you guys, really. My truck's been great on fuel since I picked it up. With the 3. 54 LSD and a 6 speed (2500, 4X4) at 70 mph I'm getting 21 mpg. #ad
I would think the auto 3500 with 3. 54s would max out at about 18 to 19 mpg.

Of course after logging about 100,000 miles on the interstate I've figured out how to do it (using the c. c. ) and not having to cancel it and speed back up to cruising. A lot of slowing down and speeding up is not very fuel efficient, but I don't know what the case is for you guys. #ad

I am working with a very good mechanic now for just the same mpg and truck. I will tell you what we have to do to get the mileage up to the 19-20 level. Stay tuned I'll get it figured out. #ad

For what it's worth, I mentioned my mileage to a guy at the local Cummins shop (16 to 17 mpg). Mine has about 47K miles on it but its never towed anything. He said that was the problem - the motor isn't fully broken in. He said hook on 6 or 7 thousand pounds and tow it 3 or 4 hundered miles. The mileage will come up.

I've heard of others having the mileage come up after towing a decent load.

Yes mine is different, its an early '98 12V. But he seemed to indicate it's a normal thing with all diesels.

I have beem logging mpg since 5000 on it. Now have 105000 miles and overall mpg. Generally get 14. 8 to 16. 2 per tank, overall is 13. 8 in all conditions, looking to get overall up to 14 mpg.

I should have also mentioned as soon as I picked up the truck I tightened the turbo hoses. The first 300 miles were around town unloaded. The next 500 miles were towing ~8K on the interstate at various speeds. Pulled GREAT milage ~10 mpg.

Harvie, Please let us know what you find out.

First 550 miles on truck (see signature), pulling a 15' flat bed trailer with river raft (about 2500 lbs but quite an aerodynamic drag). Average of 15. 0 MPG. Ran about 70 MPH at most times.

A buddy with a '96 2500 didn't see his milage go up until after he towed his 5th wheel trailer on a 1,000 mile road trip. These engines need to be broken in to get good mileage (so I hope).

Just got my 2001 2500 QC, SB, 4x4, ETH 6-sp, 3. 54 LSD, SLT++ (everything but those lights on top of the roof), White over Silver, Tan leather. Picked it up 8/31/00.

The first 3K I only got 16. 4 but now after a little over 7K on the odometer fuel/milage is above 20mpg. I agree with the tip of using the C. C. Most of my milage is on the wide tar strip and never less than 40 miles. Last trip to the river and back net'd around 21. 6mpg. Tow heavy run hard - that's the ticket.....

TVKILGORE - when my truck was new mileage around 16 Hwy . . stayed the same for 2000 miles..... Ran it hard one night for 100 miles - next day 17 HWY... . 3000 miles later towed trailer around 7000lbs for 300 miles ran it hard now mileage is over 18 and up to 20 when driving around 60 mph... . As many members have posted it will just keep running better and stronger as you get some miles on it --- Happy Truckin ------------Kwik

My '01 with a little over 9k miles, 3. 55 rear end, the overall average is between 19 and 20 mpg. About 80% of this is over the road - freeway and highway, the rest the usual stop and go. I notice a big difference between the city and highway. Also, the mpg drops the faster you go - wind resistance I think contributes to a lot of the decrease in mpg.

I'm looking forward to "breaking-in" the engine with a big load - soon forthcoming - to see if this will increase the mpg or not.

Hey, JyRO, I see you've also been over at the Ford site taunting them with your 21 mpg! My theory is that JyRO got a "defective" truck with timing that doesn't meet spec - more emmissions, but with mpg performance similar to the old 12V engines.
I think we should all force JyRO to go get his ECM "flashed" to the correct 24V specs so that he too can enjoy the low-emmissions AND the 18 to 19 mpg that the rest of us have to live with!

(Just kidding, of course - if I knew how to do the "reverse flash", it would be done. )

Tom, take those mpg numbers with a grain of salt, most everyone you read is different types of models and gear ratios. Myh truck is identical to yours except i do not know your year, i get 16-18 highway depending on how many stop signs in a 100 mile log, 8. 5-11mpg towing depending on wind, stop signs, driveing in od or out of over drive. Your truck has two extra tires to turn plus more wind resistance from wider fenders plus any extra added accesories even the big tow mirrors compared to regular mirrors make a difference. I will agree on the earlier models of trucks they do need to break in longer (98. 5-99 models). You can not compare you mileage with some one who has a 2500 or manual sift or worse yet both or some one driveing 55 verses 75, see my point, compare only your truck with identicle truck. Your mileage should improve some what over time but do not expect to acheive great numbers due to the nature of the beast your driveing ( speaking of beast, your truck is not only less areodinamic than a 2500 it weighs 700lbs more and you rear axle is a dana 80 verses dana 70 on some 2500), you pay more for a more heavy duty vehicle ( in mpg ). I had the same problem at first but over time it got better and than remember your driveing one of the biggest and most durable pickups ever made, the 3500 cummins!! Regards, Ron #ad

I have a friend that has a 1st gen dually and his boss just got a 24 valve. He told me, which he may have been blowing smoke, his 1st gen does better than the 24 valve. He also said the harder he drove, 80 vs 55, he would get better fuel milage.

On my 95 from Denver, Co to Sidney, Ne I did better running 85 with ac than running 55?

I have noticed a drop when in town due to idle and stop and go traffic.

Mac

My first diesel pickup was an 82 GMC. I bought it with a hole in the #7 piston. I rebuilt the engine with TLC and thought I was happy. At approximately 12000 I hooked on to my horse trailer to help some friends move. After 600 miles and many 4-6percent grades and I had a new truck when I got home. Power and mileage went up markedly all at once. Now I have a real truck with twice the power:0:0 #ad

Just bought a used 99 Q Cab, 4X4, AT with the 3. 5 axle Long Bed with 29k miles. It has a trip computer which says around 25 MPG at 65 mph (no load). . distrusting computers is genetic for me. Overall mpg was 22. 9 with about 20% in city driving. Verified the number manually... it was right on. Added a K&N filter and using Stanadyne fuel additive. . no apparent difference yet.

Just for the record, speed, weight, and wind resistance make a lot of difference. I made a 1000 mi trip last week with GCVW of 21000 lbs and a load on the trailer that was about 4 feet higher than the cab of the truck. I ran 65-70 mph and was driving into a headwind for half the trip. 9. 2 mpg

Took the truck on a shorter trip this weekend with no trailer, but a truck weight of about 8800 lbs. Most of the trip was on a 2 lane and speeds were only 50-60 mph. No wind. MPG: 19. 6 mpg.

Just my . 02, but I've seen this many times where weight and speed make a real big difference.
