I have a question about my new 2002 quad 4x4 long bed w/ 3:54 rear end's fuel mileage. I have about 7000 miles and my mpg is 12 to 15 mpg towing a 1700 lb tent trailer. Running about 70 on the highway and in the mountains of southern colo. I have been getting approx. 17 mpg empty. Compared to my previous ctd a 95 2wd w/ 3. 54 which dropped no lower that 15mpg towing the same trailer in the hardest conditions. It also got approx. 20 mpg without a trailer. Am I to expect a bit of a difference?

Sounds normal.....

Actually pretty good for a 4X4. You might see a little gain after it breaks in some. The 3:54's are what get you towing. The truck likes it between 1900 - 2100 RPM.

That's about the same amount of miles when I began to see an increase in mpg. It will get better as you go along. I have towed and hauled quite a bit more than your tent trailer (about 1. 5 worth of them in the bed yesterday). I've been getting around 18 around town and as much as 21 on road trips. It should get better. I have 11,500 miles on mine now.

Yep, sounds normal.

I get about the same mileage with my truck. I tow a 3000 lb boat and get around 11 - 12 up and down the mountains in Utah. On the highway without the boat, I'll get 19 - 20. :) Around town is about 14 - 15.

It would be nice to get better mileage, but I like my truck too much to complain.

2WD

I'm happy to report 20. 6 MPG on my first 800 highway miles-empty pushing 80mph all day long.

2000 6-speed 2x4 3. 54 47,000 miles on truck.
