Archived Cold WX, won't keep running

I had truck plugged in last night, drove to breakfast at Church this morning, it ran fine. After sitting for about 4 hours it would not get home. It started fine, but when I left the parking lot and started up the hill, truck almost died. I have no fuel pressure and it is below freezing and wind is blowing around 20mph. Truck driver buddy thinks it is the fuel, but I am not sure. I got it back to Church and plugged it up. Going back in a few hours to change fuel filter. I had 12-14# of fuel pressure yesterday, but did not check it this morning before I left. Any suggestions? Thanks, JC
 
After 3 hours of being plugged up, the truck started and fuel pressure came up. I went ahead and changed the filter and put in some additive. I did not think it got cold enough here, but now I know it does. They told me at the parts store another guy with an 04 Ram was having the same problem. JC
 
I had posted this in another forum, that diesel can begin to cloud at 20 and can begin to gel at 15. The cloud/gel points are regional and depend on the blend of the fuel. If the Rams are having the problem, I imagine everyone else is too. For instance, it was 18 here yesterday morning and my Bro in Laws Furd didn't start. Maybe time for some glow plugs.
 
? Fuel heater operation?

You might check the fuel heater and make sure it is functioning. I have had my truck out overnight not plugged in and had no problems running on straight #2 ( as cold as 15 below)(possible regional fuel mixes) with no additives. -Eric
 
Maybe it's the fuel I use, but I've never had a problem starting my truck. I don't use an additive (maybe I should). I wouldn't even consider plugging my truck in if the coldest it would get was 30 deg. It's been real cold here in CT the last week or so,-14 the other day, and the truck started fine. I didn't plug it in but I know I should have. My fuel co. must use an additive for winter months and the fuel stations down south must not.

Easiest way to be sure is to just dump some winter additive from the local auto parts store. Doesnt cost that much per tank, gives you a cetane boost, lubes the pump, and is priceless compared to a gelled system.



As for plugging the truck in, the block heater has no effect on the lift pump, tank, and associated systems, might have a small effect on the injector pump, but not much.
