Hi,

My truck is a dog when it comes to towing . I would like to bump the power a little, however I do not have the funding for all the stuff yet. If I put in a tst #6 plate 250/635 would my egts be a problem.

Thanks :D

Jason

I've got the TST #6 (250HP/635Tq) plate in my '98 12 Valve auto. Piers has also tweaked my pump a little bit, so I might be getting more benefit from this plate than usual. Having said that, I CAN PEG MY 1500 PRE-TURBO PYRO IN 15 SECONDS!!!!!! I don't know if a '96 Pump will react the same way as my '98.

I'm currently running an open KN RE-0880 filter. Before this, I had the stock airbox and filter, and I could peg the gauge in about 10 seconds. I've got a Psychotty, I just haven't installed it yet. Also, my boost tops out at 40 psi (too much for a stock HX35. ) I need to adjust the bleed screw on the elbow to get it back down to 32 - 34 psi.

So, I HIGHLY recommend that you install a pyro and boost gauge BEFORE adding the plate. Establish baseline readings for your stock setup, then add the plate.

fuel plate/or not

HI,

I am at a loss. I do not understand how bumping up a 180hp motor to 230 or 250 would be cause for the need to monitor the engin closer. Based on 5-speed models having the same exhaust/air flow system with 215 hp. Also new models having up to 245hp with no gauges. Also if I do bump the hp is it usable power when it comes to towing or will I have to let off and go just as slow up hills in order not to hurt the engin? That would make the new found power useless. Would I be better off to get the 230 #8 plate? or slide the stock plate forward? Is there a safer way to achive more towing power other than to buy a stock higher power diesel. My buddie has a ford powerstroke that leaves me in the dust when we take trips together. And he hauls a bigger trailer. I got to get more power.

Thanks,

Jason

Welcome fellow Idahoan.

I have the number 11 plate in and I now pull the 4th July Pass at 65 as opposed to 45 before. Egts must be monitered. I could pull it faster but the egts get to high. At 60-65 I run around 1200 degrees. Muffler is now gone and trying to find someone to drop the cat. Egts should get lower. I would never go back to stock. By the way I have a buddy with a 2000 powerstroke pulling the same 12,000 pound trailer and I smoke him. topspeed for him is 48 mph.

Need gauges

You definatley need the gauges. I am stock, no plate, no kitty and pulling a cattle trailer I can hit 1100 on a hill.

I am in Colorado and the altitude makes it run a little hotter but, untill I put the gauges in I had no idea this thing would run so hot. If you are going above stock do yourself a favor and put in gauges :D The gauges are worth, if anything , the peace of mind

It is torque not HP that matters!

JBoesl... A older truck with a 230 hp plate will out pull by a long ways a new truck with 245hp. The new truck only has about 500 torque but the 230 plate truck has well over 600. This is what is lighting the fire.

Until you ride or drive in a truck that has made a step up you can not appreciate the power.

A 230 plate installed as recomened (not slid) with a clean system (good air intake and clean exhaust) would most likely not ever have to high a EGTs' The more black smoke the more heat.

The newer 245hp trucks have the power band extend to 3200 rpms. HP=torque x constant x rpms. You could have your governer set to a higher rpm which on paper should equate to a higher HP rating but I bet your truck would NOT pull any better.

guages

Alright I am going to get the gauges:)

Is a post turbo egt guage ok? Seams like less work than drilling the manifold.

This is my plan for more power :D

230/605 tst plate

215hp injectors

Would like to get rid of my exhaust. It is not stock now, has a 3" in 3" out striaght through muffler on it , however the shop I took it put it on backwards to reduce backpressure(sounds like crap).

Not to wild, but should run good.

Thanks,

Jason

I have my pyrometer installed post turbo. If you add 300 deg, you should be safely in the ballpark.

They say if it's in the manifold, it's more accurate. Probibally is.

I'd skip the 215's and go for the 370's. Theyre actually cheaper!! Just my . 02.

If you have an older truck, you might need/want the delivery valves. I think Piers has them on sale this month.

Jason I"m going to install the #5 plate this weekend [if it gets here] and gauges I"ll post the before and after EGTs after I test it on Granite hill he he, Bob
