Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fuel Pre-Filter Cleaning

Decided to clean the little bowl, the pre-filter, after 160K+ miles on the ‘96 12v. Was going to do it ages ago but remember reading the gasket will not usually go back on and to purchase a new one so have been procrastinating. Quite some time ago I saved a short TDR article about doing this job & it did say a new strainer, gasket, & nut could be had from Dodge in a kit. My dealer guy says there is Repair Package; #4762962, $27. 95. For just a strainer, gasket, & nut?? Other advice?

Go to a Cummins parts place. The strainer kit is less than eight bucks as of one month ago.

While you're there get the other o-ring for the preheater that's above the strainer. It's not in the strainer kit and costs seventy-five cents more.

I "cleaned" mine when I changed my lift pump recently. There was nothing in it. I'm convinced that under normal circumstances, it won't need cleaned. But, it doesn't hurt to check it!
