ok guys, it is time for a new lift pump, i have read the previous posts about fuel pumps, however there is one question that doesn't ever seem to get answered: to use a regulator in line with a new pump or not. i am currently looking at the Mallory series of pumps (4140, 4150). those of you with experience with these pumps, what seems to work the best?

I've run the 140 Mallory for going on a year without the regulater. It is for use with a gas engine where you only want 6 psi fuel pressure. The Mallory is internally bypassed, done. I even turned mine up a touch.
 
My first Mallory 4150 died, don't think it had anything to due with regulator. Second 4150 is going strong, again, without a regulator. I have mine set at 12-13 psi's idle, post filter, drops to about 8 psi's at WOT, sometimes 6-7 psi's on hard WOT runs, but seems to recover back to 8 psi's very quickly. I don't think it would hurt anything by running a regulator, though I'm not yet convinced it's mandatory equipment either. Seems that it would be good for the lift pump's life expectancy. My Mallory is very strong on WOT runs, I just did a hard run(unloaded) up a 17% grade yesterday ( 5th gear, about 70 MPH) initial psi's were around 7 psi's, but midway into the grade they were back up to 9-10 psi's. Like I said, it seems to recover from the initial surge and then give you what you need when pushed.
