My 03' CTD seems to be harder to start than what it is the norm for a 3rd gen truck, yesterday it took about 5 seconds to start which was the worst it has been. My lift pump pressure was 8-9 psi but it bleed off to 0 in the matter of seconds once the pump cycled without starting the truck. I was told that the lift pump was bad by a mech at a very reputable diesel truck shop, that the return valve had failed which allowed all the pressure to bleed off. It made sense so I installed a FASS and now I have 15 psi but it I turn the key on and let the FASS pump cycle until it turns itself off without starting the truck, the same thing happens, the pressure drops to zero in a matter of seconds. I tested the rail pressure relief valve but removing the banjo fitting to see if fuel came out of it when the truck was cranked and there was nothing noticeable.
My question is it normal to see fuel pressure drop this quickly once the pump stops cycling or should it remain at a higher pressure for a longer period of time?
The truck runs great so I'm left scratching my head at this one. I'm obviously thinking either pressure relief valve or leaking injectors and I haven't chased the injectors yet.
The truck has 78,000 miles on it.
