Fuel Pressure Check for Lift Pump

Hey Guys!

I seem to be experiencing a drop in proformance, smoke output & mileage in my '92 W250.

Wanted to verify the lift pump output and have read the manual on how to do so. It states to use a fuel pressure gauge and "T" into the fuel output line (lift pump).

Has anyone done this on our trucks and what are the tricks beyond the few short sentences that the shop manual mentions.

I have just replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the K&N and low pressure bled & high pressure bled the injectors. Next, I plan to adjust the valves and vacuum test the fuel supply line from the tank. Injector pump was rebuilt & timed by Ted Jannetty last Memorial Day Weekend (25,000 miles ago).

Anyone have any thoughts on where else to look for my lost power (Power wagon, Old School, Stab etc. anyone... anyone... )

Truck Currently has 175,000 on her.

Hey Keeno, I seem to be experienceing (sp) the same symptoms. Have done everything but test fuel pressure. I am suspecting something in the fuel itself. We are nearing the end of winter fuel blend, refineries are pulling down holding tanks to lo lo levels to get it all out. Also they are slow to reintroduce summer blend until right before the end of the month. They do that to avoid inventory taxes. After the first they will start refilling again.

The above qualifies as a W. A. G. (Wild A$$ Guess). Just my suspicion.

At Ted's last May was that a new install of a rebuilt pump or is the present pump the original with 175k on it?
The reason for the question is if you can recall my need at 160k of a reman. and "enhanced" pump because of the AFC/fuel load pin that was stuck in the "unenhanced" or lean position. That is one possibility... .
Another one (rare) is the possibility your fuel adjust. screw and locknut may have backed off???
I hear you have come into possession of an "original edition" '92 repair manual... check the low power complaints... (I'll bet you already have)
I'll dust the cobwebs off, and take a trip down memory lane and post back on the V pump if I can.

Hey Old School!

Yeah, I've been doing a bit of reading from that exact publication you've mentioned... . Thanks again for the addition to my library. The problem is sometimes even the manual seems a bit vague... Oh Well!

Yes! My pump is a completely rebuilt/enhanced JRE 20% over max fuel Bosch VE44 installed and timed to the desired 1. 35mm via Ted Jannetty @ JRE last May when we came up to visit with you. This pump is set up exactly like Ted spec'd out your former "Big Medicine" VE pump and the BD injectors were installed during the same visit. I have currently left all of the external adjustments where Ted had set them a year ago and wish to investigate elsewhere before looking to the pump for my lost power. I guess it's possible that the pump isn't as strong as "day 1" but it's always performed consistantly.

Your old truck is really stompping my ride these days and I need to find the source of the power loss.

Come on PowerWagon & Guys... You must of done a few lift pump output checks on these old trucks in your day. What's the hot tip?

Million Dollar question: What type of grease is used on the Fuel Rate Delivery Pin/Diaphram Assy from Bosch?

Don't have the "spec" on the Bosch light grease, but if I were to be doing one I would use light synthetic grease, or white lithium. (key word is light).
Just had a thought... ... could those new wide tires be a contributor to any "perceived" loss of engine power? and that gal is spanking you with 35" tall tires and 3. 55 gear?
I know you are on the case and wish you good hunting.

Thanks for the thoughts Old School!

I started noticing the decrease in power before my travels last November and didn't make it a priority to investigate. So, it started before the new larger (Taller), but somewhat 'skinnier' tires were installed. I went with a less agressive AT tire over the wider MT's I use to run trying to gain MPG & reduce noise & wear.

Still getting my butt kick and getting worse mileage in the process.

Maybe Shrimpy is correct it's just a winter fuel thing! I won't know until I check the Lift Pump output and adjust the valves.
