I just bought a gauge to check the LP pressure with. I installed the gauge in the back port and it indicated 0 psi. I unscrewed the gauge and no diesel came from the port. I tried the other (front) port and the same thing happened- no fuel. I spoke with a friend and he said those ports are not blocked. Anyone one know what gives??? Thanks.

Your lift pump is probobly dead. I know that this may be a stupid question but did you bump the starter to cycle the lift pump when you had the gauge installed. Or did you start the truck?

IMHO, there are no 'stupid' or 'dumb' questions...

I installed the gauge then started the engine and ran it until I could get out and look at the gauge. At this point, I loosened the gauge until diesel started leaking out around the threads on the gauge. There was no diesel to be seen.

I then took the gauge off and looked inside the port. I saw a bit of liquid and that's it. At that time, I loosened the other plug, and no diesel came out.

The truck runs strong and without missing or shuddering. It will however bog down sometimes in a turn.

I ordered another lift pump from Hoeldiesel (sic)...

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if anyone was going to reply to my message.

John,

After I installed my fuel pressure gauge, it read zero too.

I took the truck to the dealer to have them test it with a direct-reading gauge. It had to be:

1. A faulty gauge or sender, or

2. A faulty installation, or

3. A faulty lift pump

As it turns out, my lift pump was not putting out any pressure. The mechanic could not understand how my truck could run under that condition.

I took this to be good news, since it meant that I didn't screw up the installation, but the best news was that Dodge would replace my lift pump under warranty. They had one in stock and did it while I waited.

Batesville Dodge, Batesville, Indiana. Great dealership.

I recommend getting a second opinion (direct-reading gauge) on your fuel pressure.

Good luck,

Loren

Re: Pressure gauge...

Thanks for the replies, gents!

Loren, this warranty you spoke of, is this the 100k warranty that Cummins gives or is it an extended warranty?

When I replace the pump, I'm going to bench test it and find out exactly what went wrong with it.

I'm amazed that with all the lift pump problems that there isn't a class-action lawsuit against Cummins. This is totally unacceptable.
