so first order of business is to get a fuel pressure gauge, right?! I understand that there are several different types. Mechanical and electrical? Are there any others? Can anyone tell me which is better and why? Thanks.

Mechanical gauges are better,Here is my reasoning. You will get an instantaneous reaction on what is going on in the fuel line. Mechanical guages also last longer, the potentionmeter in an electrical gauge can be troublesome. Changes in source voltage can also effect readings. To get a decent readings from any fuel guage electric or mechanical, you need to install the test port away from the VP44,or you will get a buzz from the gauge caused by positive and negative pulses at the VP44 test port. Best place is exiting the fuel filter housing so you can see if the filter is restricted. The fuel filter housing will also act like an accumulator which will smooth out the negative impulse of the VP44s internal pump and the lift pumps positive pulse.
