Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel pressure guage installation

I am in the process of installing a fuel pressure sending unit and guage from Geno's into my 98. 5. Which of the two plugs on top of the fuel filter must be removed to install the sending unit? The one nearest the outlet line (as I would suspect) or the other one. Also, does a sealant of any sort need to be put on the sending unit threads?
