Just purchased a basket case, 95 2500 Regular Cab truck with a fuel problem. Found bad lift pump, replaced, now have fuel to injection pump. I don’t hear the overflow valve popping off like the last three Cummins I’ve owed but I know fuel is getting there because the return fuel line is leaking (repaired), so I pulled the valve and stretched the spring, still don’t hear it pop. Tried starting with two injector lines cracked but no fuel is getting to the injectors. Found the shutoff solenoid not engaging , if I push the solenoid up it will hold so I checked for fuel at the injectors again, still none. :{

This is where I’m at until Monday when an overflow valve I ordered should show up (I have one can’t find it). I believe this will be the last thing to get fuel to the injectors but I’m open to any info you may have.

Thanks

Sometimes it takes awhile for fuel to get to the injectors. I loosen all 6, then tighten them after they start spitting fuel.

I cranked it a total of 7 times 15sec each time but found the shutoff solenoid after the 4th time. I'll crack it some more Monday, I work weekends and will be off Monday morning.

Thanks

Agreed and using a remote start switch under the hood will allow for tightening while still cranking, also keeps the yelling at an assistant a thing of the past

Well I got the overflow valve in and installed along with a pressure gauge, I can now pump up the pressure but it will slowly bleed off. Looks as if there may be a problem at the fuel tank or the fuel line to lift pump. Still can't get it started so I moved to Ether (I disconnected the grid heaters) and got it started and now have new problems.

It idles at 1200-1300 RPM and basically has no throttle response. If I put my foot to the floor the RPM's increases slowly and if I let off it doesn't slow down. After about a minute to a minute and a half idle increased to 2000 RPM so I turned it off but it keep running for about 10 sec. then died.

I believe the pump timing has slip but I'm more than open to any ideas. I have the tools to time the pump but have never done it.

Thanks

Fuel filter was changed out before I started, I don't think the govenor springs have been touched but they may have come apart.

I'm liking the gas in the fuel, I'll check that first along with a new fuel filter. I'll use a 5 gal gas can on the fuel heater input line, this will also isolate the fuel tank/hose bleed down.

Thanks for the input.

Interesting, I was under the impression the pump stayed under pressure even when shut down. So you don't have a starting problem I take it? How long before the pressure bleeds off? Mine takes about 3-5 mins, it varies.

Thanks

Well, if it is supposed to, then mine is not good either. No problems starting, even after sitting all weekend. No smoke, rough idle either. Dropping the tank this weekend and going with the draw straw and replacing the original lines at the tank. Mine loses pressure within one minute also.

There won't be any pressure if the pump isn't pumping, so zero is normal after shutdown. I don't think you have a problem Smitty.

That's what I was thinking Gary. Just finished dropping the tank and replacing the original hoses at the module. Thought I might be pressing my luck a bit with them. Also installed the draw straw in the module.
Get this, had a new sender and thought it was a good time to replace also even the other one was working ok, probably only 100k on it. New sender defective, had to reinstall the old one. My tank being a steel 55gal unit required the use of two jacks and my brother's help. Oh well.
Probably leaving around the 6th for the west coast.

Thanks

In Albuquerque now and Flagstaff Friday or so. Lost my solenoid relay today. Oh well.
Towing into this wind is not much fun either. You be safe. We should be in Seattle around the first. p
