Im completely ignorant on 3 gen CR stuff. My friends truck is down. It stumbles and cuts off, he changed the fuel filter and bled air out but it still does it. Does the 03 have an intank lift pump? can it be bypassed somehow and a fass installed?

Your symptoms can cause several things, the most common is the FCA which is on the back of the CP3 pump. You can try putting in two cans of ashless outboard motor oil into the tank and see if clear things up.

Take the fuel pressure before you decide to replace the lift pump.

The lift pump should be attached to fuel filter or close to it unless he took it to dealer with a failed lift pump then they would of put the lift pump in the tank (after 2005). The lift pumps do fail on the thrid generations often (many members carry a spare).

Do not add any motor oil to the fuel! It won't burn well, will varnish up the injector parts and can gum up the piston rings. Check the fuel pressure going to the high pressure (CP3) pump; it is likely that the stock lift pump has failed (Geno's carries replacement pumps, an adapter to check pressure, and has a discussion of lift pump options in their catalog).

See if it threw a code. Mine did. Same symptoms, but they showed at highway speeds. I looked at the Fass. The truck was back on the road the next day after a trip to NAPA for the stock lift pump (on the back of the filter housing). The Fass was way more money and the truck would have been down for awhile. I carry a spare. It can be changed out on the side of the road in the worst case scenario with a couple tools.
