I had posted a previous post asking for help with idle surging and no power and alot more black smoke than usual. Tried fuel filter and had no luck.

Made an appointment with the dealer but had to wait a week to get the truck in. No big deal. Truck sat for three days before it went in and the day it went in to the dealer i started it and had a real bad misfiring effect or sputtering at startup for about 5 seconds. Smoked alot too. Started to worry a little. Went to drive out of the driveway and had very little power and it looked like i was driving an old nonturbo-d ford 7. 3. Lots of smoke!!! But not cool with no power. Got to the dealer and dropped it off telling of the new problem.

6 hours later got a call from the dealer telling me it was my high pressure pump that was failing. Causing a fluctuating fuel pressure resluting in the no power and surging idle condition.

Replaced under waranty. Truck runs great now no more smoke and no more surging.

Just telling everyone to let them know if you experience any of these problems. By the way my dealer has been great to me on everything I take to them here.

Yep, I have a friend with a 2003 HO/48RE who had the HP fuel pump replaced. He was experiencing idle surging that was tracked to a pressure sensor that's supposedly embedded in the HP fuel pump and cannot be changed in the field. The sensor let rail pressure drop, then caught it and idle speed would surge up to 1100-1200 RPM, then come back to normal.

Pretty expensive sensor if the whole pump has to be replaced to fix it!
