I am having problems with power loss in my '97. The problem is consistent with constriction of the fuel supply. The owner's manual says you are supposed to clean the"fuel screen" each 12k miles. Where is this fuel screen?

The only modification I have done is to put in a Primeloc fuel filter relocation kit. I have around 67k miles and only around 2k on the most recent fuel filter. Otherwise, this is a pure stock engine with no problems ever.

I know this is an easy question for you experienced wrench twisters. I can do basic things, and am hoping to restore original power with your help. Thanks a lot.

The screen is at the pump or just inside the pump. My sons truck needed a pump. Everone else tried selling the screen with it. Anyway the Cummins man cleaned the screen and put it back in.

There is also a check valve up near the fuel injection pump which will also restrict fuel flow. None of that is real expensive. He did not loose the pump until 150k on his 96.

Give you local Cummins man a call.

The screen is located in the bottom of the fuel heater, one bolt on the bottom removes it. Fuel heater is to the left of your lift pump. If cleaning doesn't fix your problem it could be the overflow valve. Come back and we'll figure it out.

There is a 17mm hex head cast in the bottom of the fuel screen cover. It can be reached from the top but you need long arms. If you remove it from the bottom use a long extension and a universal joint to avoid a fuel bath. It's pretty easy job to remove and clean.
