Speaking of the Fuel Screw

Well, it was such a nice day I decided it was high time for my fuel screw to lose it's virginity;)

All I can say is:--)

First I turned it in about 1/2 turn... made a 10 mile test run.

I liked that so much, I made another 1/2 turn adjustment... . then had to turn the idle down... it had climbed about 150 rpm.

Made that same test run again... . yikes!! I think I can run with most of you guys now!!!

I'd say my EGTs went up maybe 100 deg... not at cruise but on a bonzai run... . I was able to hit 1200 ... going up a good sized hill, truck was empty, speedo was at 90 and the boost gage had long been pinned at 30...

Got some good smoke now..... not enough to block out the sun, but I did a pretty good number on an explorer that tried to crawl up my butt:D

I think I'll make some adjustments to lighten that up a scosh.

Said all this in one post too!!:D

Now I got to get on a dyno... .....

very nice!... as you did i too took the opportunity to work on the truck with this good weather. . i fabbed up my grid heater to intercooler pipeing etc and got rid of the engine fan. . im going to electric and starting to fab the twins up. . i might even start them tommarrow. . turning the exhuast manifold upside down and then mounting the hy35 or my stocker there and then making the exhaust mount to put the hx55 there..... oh well. . soon it will be running... . hope to see you at one of the meets sometime soon. . good luck with the fuel increase. . next you should get a extra fuel pin and grid the snot out of it ... hehe maybe at the next meet you can swap mine in for a test run. . ?... !. .

thanks later

After I finished changing the transmission fluid and filter today I tinkered with the pump some. I didn't get as lucky as most people do, though. :(

My fuel screw would only go in 1/2 turn before it hit the collar. :( I turned the smoke screw in about 1 1/4 turns, about 1/3 turn down on the starwheel, and 90* on the cone. It made a little bit of a difference, but my idle also went up considerably. I couldn't really tell how much it was smoking - traffic was so bad I had to keep my eyes pointed forward. I didn't notice much of a change in boost - maybe 1 psi, and the EGTs might have gone up a little less than 100* at WOT (up to ~90 MPH getting on the freeway:D) - hit around 1100* best I could tell.

In the end, I decided I'd rather have injectors so I put everything back to stock, and will see how the $$$ situation is after vacation.

My big concern right now is the metal I found in the transmission pan. Not a lot, but some aluminum and brass/copper flakes. I have found the same each time I change the fluid - the first time there was a LOT, the rest of the times about like today. I don't think the pan had ever been off before and figured it might take a few changes to get all the crap out, but after one flush and four or five fluid changes I don't think it's just old junk making it's way out... :(

TWINS? What kind of HP are you running? Man, unless you're around 500hp or so, you don't really need twins. And even then, it's overkill unless you tow.

... hehe maybe at the next meet you can swap mine in for a test run. . ?... !. .

Ok Deo... . it's a deal:D

Can't wait to see the new twins!!!

BTW..... just got a 99. 5 TDI jetta on the road for the wife... looking to chip it soon!

Dan get down on that screw and crank on it. It will drive right through the coller. You can even screw ut out and put it in a vice and remove the coller. Just count the turns so you know where you started from.

I may do that some other time. After dealing with the transmission and trying - :mad:unsuccessfully, I might add:mad: - to track down a rattle for about the 40th time, I'm fresh out of patience. ;)

ROFLMAO. Jay, welcome to the group of overfuelled, power hungry, BOMBaholic h0ars who never get enough:D  (in response to your "virgin" fuel screw- what a pun). Now, how far is it to the lock collar? Mine was bottomed out when I got it. 1200? You need MORE FUEL, bud.

I did some mangling on my fuel pin tonite- got tired of the bottom end smoke, so I took the Dremmel to the lean side of it, and loosened the AFC spring upon reinstall. I need to take it on a test run against some ricers, but am a bit hesitant at the possibility of making a total @$$ of myself. That, and a few cops have been tailing my loud muffler. Had one follow me halfway to the hill farm the other day.

Eeeegaddsssss... . huckleberry ... . that really is SO wrong it hurts...

Oh, CB... twins are needed when you've got enough fuel and not enough air... eg: when your EGT's are at 1800*F and your boost is at rougly 50psi..... kinda like that... :D:D... ;)

Tip #2, if you ground your AFC cone, you should consider leaving the AFC starwheel/spring were it is until you test it... do ONE thing at a time...

Next you may find that you can bring the starwheel up a tad. This is especially true if you have larger nozzles...

This is a personal thing to be honest, but I find that larger injectors provide more than enough fuel to the bottom/low-mid range that extra is a waste of fuel and a huge smoke/EGT producer.

Use care when you do your cone grind as well... if you go too far the guide pin will protrude too much and you'll develope a fuel leak into the AFC bore.

I've recently assembled a "pump top kit" to re-do/refresh the top as well.

We're seeing more of this type of leaking, in addition to the throttle shaft/bushing leaks developing as well... it's an age thing. .

NO NOT MINE ;):D:D

If anyone is interested, you can PM or phone me about it but I won't go into detail on the open Forums.

Now, how far is it to the lock collar?

Mine was pretty much against the collar yesterday morning. I managed to get the collar off by spreading itwith a screwdriver, then yanking on it with pliers..... came rignt off. Now it's in one turn from there.

Engine sounds better at upper boost levels... . I think it was starving for fuel.

I will be making some starwheel/smoke screw adjustments to try to get the smoke down when I'm above 1500 ish.

And no fuel cone grinding for me... ... at least not until I try Deo's.....

Make a new one from scratch????? Hmmmm... ... .

Daniel... . is removing the lock collar like removing a con***... . more pleasure for the driver?

Jay

Jay,

cant tell you about removing the collar; I've never had mine off, but I have bumped one or two back a notch or two- 6mm wreench works wonders for that.

I did a custom grind on my fuel pin last night, in an effort to cut smoke and EGTs. Took it to about the 75% lean setting, and ground about 1/3 of the way thru the skinny part of the cone. Dont worry, there is a good 1/8" left; plenty solid. Then I tapered it out to about 1/2way down the tapered part, kind of a two stage taper. So, I now have a hybrid cone, that flows just as much at upper boost levels, yet cuts my smoke at the bottom. I got caught up on my forum reading, then couldnt stand it any more- I had to take it for a test run. This was about 11:30pm... ... I could only leave a discernable cloud on a 3rd gear start up a hill; still have about the same bottome end pull, only I cant fog out the ricers:{. Oh well, cant have it all, I guess. seems to have lowered my EGTs a hair- have to wait and see what MPGs are.

Pastor, I'm already deeper than the deep side in stock form (ok, by half the width of a med pt ball point pen ball, but still... . ) what more do you want? I cant afford to break anything off should my steady-as-the-Waco-Kid's (Blazing Saddles) hands slip while Dremmelling away. Keep saying I'm going to get some stock and grind my OWN pin design, but havent gotten a roundto-it. Ex girlfriend got one when she went into the Navy, but that is another story..... ;)
