I have been having trouble starting my truck in cold weather. I first experienced this problem in Nevada about a week ago. I push the lever up on the bottom of the fuel selenoid and it starts immediately. If the engine is warm it will restart or start. This morning in cold weather(14 degrees) the engine turns over but will not start and when the lever is pushed up the engine goes immediately. I just replaced the selenoid four mounths ago. The local dealership wants to install a new relay. Has anyone had this problem and if so what do I do to fix it? GAdams
 
Lotsa of posts on this problem.

Do a search back a few weeks.

Chances are it's your relay as this seems to be the biggest culprit. Buy one at Radio Shack for a few bucks part #275-226, change it and see what happens.

I had the same intermintent problem.

Mine was the relay. Did the radio shack $6 fix and so far so good now for 4 months.
 
Check your battery connections!

Cooler weather and problems... make sure your battery connections are good and clean. Would not hurt to have batteries tested. After that I would check (replace) reley for grid heaters. It is not to hard to clean and relube the FSO Solinoid and verify the linkage at the same time.

In a past thread I discussed another possibility, the fusible link (blue colored) that attaches to the battery clamp on the driver's side battery. If there is a bad connection, you won't get enough amps to work the start coil of the solenoid.
 
GAdams, eleminate the battery as the culprit first. Then do the $6. 00 Radio Shack relay if needed.



I fought with my solenoid last summer for days. In the end, cleaning the battery post solved the problem. I just knew that it couldn't be the batteries since there was adaquate power to crank the engine in a normal fashion.



On reflection, I suspect Joe is right and I actually solved the problem by concidentally correcting a bad connection on the blue fuseable link while cleaning the post and cable ends.

Mine was the relay as well, dirty contacts fixed for free. Took relay apart and cleaned the contacts. 'been working for 4 months so far.
