I'm confused (there's something new).

Brought my truck in for a leaky pinion seal (second time for this) and a non-functioning fuel guage (second time for that too!).

They (the dealer, it's under an extended warranty) said the "whole thing" in the tank was gone, and told me I need not only the sending unit, but a new pump.

The truck is running fine. No skips, nothing (sorry, I don't have a fuel pressure guage).

Does this diagnosis sound right to you guys ?

If so, could the other fuel pump (I guess it's called the VP44?) have been damaged ??

PS Took it in two weeks ago. Said they would call me when the parts came in (should be 2 days, he says). I'm playing the game to see just how long before they call. Ya right !!!

Thanks for any info.

Ray

Dealer once told me the pump in my tank was bad and that the fuel module needed to be replaced. It was under warranty so I told them go for it knowing full well there is no pump in the tank. Dealer called a while later and said after dropping the tank they figured out the tank pumps are only on gassers. Glen E Thomas in Long Beach Calif, don't trust them with your diesel.

Learned something new today from a mechanic who knows his stuff. Electric fuel pumps in the tank became common place on gassers since the advent of fuel injection. Seems the pumps weren't lasting long outside the tank due to overheating, they were relocated to the tank for cooling. He also said running the tank low on fuel cuts sharply into the life of the pump due to the heat. Maybe something for you 24 valve guys to think about.

So if I understand you, the 12 valvers do NOT have a pump in the tank, and the 24 valvers (or later models) do?

Neither of the Diesels have pumps in the tanks. The pumps are on the side of the engine just below and to the rear of the fuel filter on both the 24 and 12 v trucks.

Your dealer is a moron. You do probably need a new sending unit for the tank and your lift pump could be shot too, but they are not going to find the pump in the tank.

The fact that I can get better info on this web-site than from my dealer says something, don't it ?

So it would appear I have the infamous lift pump problem. Woohoo !!!

Thanks for straightening me out guys.
