I'm trying to determine why no fuel can be moved through my sending unit. The suction line is good from the flange (top) down through the rigid plastic stalk that is inserted into the strainer at the bottom of the sending unit. Fuel passes easily through the strainer itself.
A few questions:
1) What is the disc shaped float with a small rubber valve that sits within the strainer? Without it installed, I'm able to siphon (water) through the suction line until the container I placed the sending unit in (large coffee can) is nearly empty. With the disc in place, only the water inside the sending unit canister is siphoned out and then the siphon is broken. I'm thinking that this may be my trouble.
2) What is the correct orientation of the disc? Umbrella seal up or down?
3) If I re-assemble the sending unit without the disc, will there be any really unmanageable downside? Will, for instance, the truck run out of fuel on a hill unless the tank is nearly full?
4) I've read in these pages about what is called a "draw straw". Are those intended for use in something like a pulling truck, being not well suited for hilly terrain? I'm not a serious off-roader, but I do occasionally need to get pretty well off the pavement. Having the thing pretend it's out of fuel at a time like that would have me kicking myself.
Thanks in advance.
