Went to make some adjustments on the AFC because I wanted less smoke (I Know) anyway as I was getting ready to remove the AFC cover, the Fuel shut down solenoid fell off. Long story short, I have a new boot on, replaced the third mounting bolt that also was missing, and now I'm trying to determine what I should use as a retainer clip for the plunger. By that I mean, the plunger attaches to a stud on the linkage and the stud has a small hole thru it for some kind of keeper. The factory manual doesn't show what is used, so hoping someone here can get me looking in the right direction. I have a very small cotter pin there right now, but I doubt it would last long. I'm thinking some stainless wire thru the hole and twisted would work. Similar to how wire is used in the tamper proof spots on the pump. Also need to know the size and pitch of the metric bolts that hold the AFC cover on. I have one that is stripped and want to go one size larger and tap out a new hole for it. Thanks

First, the hole on the stud is for a cotter pin (Cummins part # 3919449) ... its just a regular cotter pin. (Finally found my Parts catalog today). As for the AFC Screw, I can't help you there. The Parts catalog doesn't show the bolt, just the AFC unit attached to the pump.

Dave, I would look for a real small retaining pin like you use on your trailer hitch pin. They make real small ones that should fit that hole, as for the bolts sizes here they are.

AFC bolts, stock a M6x1. 0 thread. Top ones are 16mm long (18mm will work but 20mm is too long.

Bottom ones are 25mm long.

Torque plate bolts are 12mm long, same thread pitch.

mine hasn't had a cotter pin since I've owned the truck... I've put about 30k on it... I would imagine that it didn't have one for quite a few miles before I got it ;) :D

Thanks for the information. I imagine since the mounting frame uses three bolts, perhaps you don't need the cotter / hitch pin. I guess I'm just one of those that when I see a hole, something automatically needs to be inserted in it. Boy did I open myself up for that one. Is there any reason I shouldn't re-tap the mounting bolt out to one size larger? It sure looks like there is enough metal around it that it shouldn't hurt anything.

Another option for the stripped threads would be to use a thread insert if you can find them.

The keeper on my shutoff solenoid is just a small "hitch pin" like Ron suggests. They are easy to remove and replace.

I am with you on the need for keeping them holes filled.
