I have some travel coming up soon - a few 1,000+mi trips to make. Because my truck is 4 yrs old with close to 100K, I've been thinking of what can break & leave me in the middle of nowhere. My truck has always been kept up on the more common maint items (serp. belt, hoses, etc). The two things that jump out at me are the fuel shutdown solenoid and clutch slave cylinder. Yep, I know about the KDP and that sucker is dead as soon as I land a jig... .

So here's the question to the CTD faithful - based on your experience, what's the useful life of these pieces ??

If anyone can think of other "gotcha's" for this age & mileage let me know please.

Thanks for the input.....

Clutch FORK went at 35,000... thought it was a slave cyl. Dodge replaced it under warr. still broke, found out it was the FORK not the cyl. Fuel Shutdown Solenoid went at 125,000 Both pieces went without ANY warning!!!!!!!! my . 02 Ed3:p

The shutdown solenoid is a simple device that should last a very long time, they are usually replaced needlessly when a person is just throwing parts at a problem. The solenoid relay, wiring and starter contacts are usually the problem. Cleaning the solenoid if it's binding up is usually all it needs. Even if your shutdown system fails a piece of baling wire (or even a shoestring) to hold it open will keep you from being stuck.

The POS plastic slaves do fail but usually you will lose full clutch slowly, I wouldn't replace it till it breaks.

I replaced my clutch master/slave cylinders at 140,000. They failed right after installation of a new Southbend clutch. It had me going for a while but Peter pin pointed it as soon as I talked with him. :p It felt good prior to failure but it slowly lost it's ability to do it's job. I can feel the difference with the new ones installed.

Hope this helps.

Happy Trails

Bob
