It finally happened to me (it wouldnt start) and thanks to you guys I knew what to do besides call the tow truck, leave the key on and go under the hood and push up the shutoff solonoid by hand and it held and off I went. I removed the relay which is the big one of the 2 above the engine on the firewall and opened it up by the gorilla method which was to saw the case in half with a Dremel tool and the cleaned the contacts and so far it has worked fine. Now that I see how the case comes apart heres how. There are little lips in the case that catch on the relay base so you have to slip something thin between the case and the base on all 4 sides and pull hard.

The Radio Shack part # is 275-226 and price is $5. 99. The blades are smaller on 2 of the connection points but the configuration is the same and it is rated at 30 amps.

Here is the pic

Tried to attach to the above post, wouldnt let me so maybe this will work.

It seems to me that 31. 8KB is smaller than 32. 0KB so why wont it allow the 31. 8 pic to post. Oh well shrink it again Sam.

The solenoid is a very simple device that should last the life of your engine. Many are replaced needlessly when the problem lies elsewhere. It's most always the wiring or relay that fails. If the rubber boot on the solenoid falls apart the plunger can get gunked up and stick, a little cleaning and a new boot will fix it right up. Also if your starter contacts wear out and stick it can charge the lift windings in the solenoid for too long, overheat and fry them. That's why it's best to replace your $15 contacts before they fail rather than chance burning up the $280 solenoid.
