HI,

I recently bought a 1989 D250..... Truck runs fine except the truck will not shut off with the key... . The previous owner has a manual choke type cable set up to kill the fuel to the engine... Kind of like the engine shutoff on some heavy equipment..... I do alot of stop and go drives during the day (lawn care) and it is a pain to use the key and pull the lever... . I'd like to have it work like factory (with the key only)... . The local truck repair shop quoted me $485!!!!..... Can anybody tell me where the solenoid is and is it a very difficult repair to do (special tools etc??).

Also, where is the best place to buy shuch a part?... . I tend to lean away from Dodge dealers cause I hear they are expensive.

Thanks

Andrew

Solenoid is top rear of pump. There's a bracket with two small holes to the fender side of the pump. You'll have to work around that or chop it off using a hacksaw or similar tool. FSS don't come cheap. Last time I checked, Cummins had for nearly $250. I'm sure someone else will have more info. Good luck.

Double check this first, but I believe the Bosch part number for the Dodge is the same as a Volkswagon. I thought my solenoid was bad, so I ordered a Bosch part number 0 330 001 040. I believe it was under $50. I ordered it from FCP Groton or a similar outfit.

Again, double check the part number in some other posts. I have not put this in myself, but I read enough at the time to decide it was the right one.

I believe there is some work to do with a grinder to get enough clearance past a bracket to get to the solenoid.

I'm with you -- the manual choke cable seems a little hokey.

I would get on ebay for that. I saw them for under $30 on there recently, get two for that money and modify the bracket that makes it nearly impossible to access the thing when you do replace it.

Not sure on the p/n but the VW info is correct. Same part.

I cut my bracket 1/2 way thru with a cut off tool, then used the "cresent wrench" method to finish removal. You can do the wrench deal to take it off without cutting. Also remove the throttle cable bracket to get at it better.

This is a good time to put an eye type end on the wire, it can't fall or vibrate off that way.

From other peoples posts, it COULD be that the solenoid is fine, and the plunger is stuck in the up position, just need cleaning. Ought to check before spending too much on a new one.

electrical ??

Before you get too wild, try unplugging the wires from the solenoid to see if that kills it. My ignition switch (<$30) went bad and was still supplying voltage to the solenoid when the key was off. I agree that this is probably not it, but it did happen to me.

Cut off Solenoid...

I bought a Bosch 0 330 001 040 from after market VW dealer, ($30. 00). I wonder what the difference is with the last three digits:confused: Still new in the box I have not needed it, yet:rolleyes: I saw this part on other posts, and I'm almost sure it was the number listed:eek:

Patrick.

Very likely the last three digits are the application number. Just like the VE injection pump Bosch p/n's 0 460 426 114, 205 etc

I have one for the VW on my pump and I have a spare in the truck.
