I had the fuel strainer off and cleaned it out. (something a lot of people don't do often enough) . I do it once a year and it always has gunk in it. After reassembling and installing it I have had a real rough time starting it. I have the relocated fuel filter so bleeding it with the manuel prime pump helps it get going quicker. It will run ok but let it sit overnight and it's a rough chug- chug start up again! I am thinking that it is time to replace the flat ring gasket in the strainer bowl. it might be seeping air since that is the only place I was breaking the fuel line at. The steelier will sell me the complete assembly and they have no part number for just the gasket. Has anyone had this problem and found a different gasket at Napa. Would like to know if you have a part number. Thanks, ken

Thankyou dave, forgot to look there! I did do a bit more research on the search and I think I will crawl back up under and remove that fuel heater. I live in sunny fl. and I don't need it. maybe I will get a better seal this time. I think it is leaking in that area and that will cause an air pocket in the fuel filter being that it starts, runs for about 5sec. then dies. ken

You may have already taken care of this, but the part # for the screen kit is Fleetgard 33845400-S and includes the screen, a nut, and the "O" ring. The part # for just the "O" ring is Fleetgard # 3834185-S. The cost of the "O" ring is around 85 cents plus postage. These are available through Cummins.

Hi - I'm getting ready to clean my pre-filter, and I looked at the shop manual it says to drop the starter to get at the heater/pre-filter? I'v taking the starter off before and its no easy task. Is there a better?

thanks

Garry----No need to remove the starter. I just removed the fuel heater and cleaned the pre-filter about a month ago. I did it from the bottom. The pre-filter is easy to get off, but the fuel heater is a little more challenging. The adapter that holds it on is pretty tight. The adapter takes a 8mm allen wrench. The mistake I made was to try to use a socket with an allen head on it. It wasn't long enough to adequately get into the fitting. It's dark in there and all I knew was that I thought I was getting a good bite, but the socket was just continuing to spin. I was advised by Joe G to use a regular allen wrench and use an adjustable wrench on the end of it. That worked just fine. If you're pulling the heater out, you'll end up with two gaskets, and will only need one of then. Look both gaskets over, because you may be able to use one or both of them over again.
