Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Mileage Improvement - Towing

I have a 98-24valve 2500, 5-spd, with about 120K miles on it. Recently, we started having some problems with the engine not responding to the accelerator.

Here's what I did to demonstrate the problem:

+ Accelerate pretty hard thru the gears

+ Then level off in 5th gear

+ Then, all of the sudden, the engine did not respond to the accelerator & the check engine light came on

+ After coasting for about 4 or 5 seconds, the engine started responding again

I noticed this before when I was coming down off of a hill.

I confess that the fuel filter had never been changed so I changed it but no difference.

Suggestions???

Well it could be a couple of things, but this sounds like a APPS/TPS (acclerator peddle position sensor or throttle position sensor) problem. Do a search for APPS or TPS and see what others have had to say. Bottom line is that once they go bad they only get worse. A few guys have cleaned them up and had success for a while, but eventually its going to have to be replaced.

I can't remember if you have an APPS or TPS but they do the same thing.

It might also be a good idea to check your fuel pressure, but because this happens at the end of a big accel after leveling it off I think it has to be the APPS.

lbaily, I had a '98 24 valve and had the same problem. A new APPS fixed it. It's the black rounded box held on by 3 bolts at the right front of your engine (when standing in front of it) and that is what your throttle cable hooks onto. It is bolted to the engine with 3 bolts. Unfortunately they are a little pricey and only available from the dealer last I knew.

I would compare prices with Mopar4less.com
