Truck dies

I own a 2006 2500 with 75,000 miles on it. the truck has never had any tunners installed or pressure boxes. I did open up the exhaust ( cat back Magnaflow, mainly for sound)but that's about it. I don't work the truck all that hard, the heavy side is about 8-9 thousand pounds but average trailer is about 4-5 thousand. My question is I see lots of people with injector issues or other fuel related problems. I change my fuel filter every 8-10 thousand miles. Should I look into additional fuel filtration? I almost always buy my fuel from the same 3 stations, they are truck stops so I would think they have fresh fuel. Just thinking out loud, looked at a new diesel this weekend, with the cost of them I would like to get another 150,000 out of mine. My buddy's 04 is getting a new CP3 and don't want to drop that kind of $$$ if I can avoid it. He also has stacked box's and all sorts of go fast parts on the truck. Thanks in advance for any advice, Happy Holidays.

I believe Baldwin makes the best drop-in fuel filter for the Dodges at this point, although its been some time since I researched stock filters.

While go fast stuff plays some into early failures, bad fuel is probably the worse thing for these CR injectors... . I lost mine because of a load of water, however the actual failure happened a year after getting that contaminated fuel. That was around 145k...

I put 230k miles on an '06 in one year and nine months when I was transporting trailers. Never used any fuel additive in that truck or the '01 I owned before it. Just purchased a lot of clean #2 diesel fuel from truck stops, mostly Flying J. I have never had any problems with dirty fuel, failed injectors, or bad injection pumps.

I've always changed fuel filters at 15k mile intervals as recommended by Dodge. I do not understand why some want to dump strange chemicals in their fuel tanks or use filters other than Fleetguard products but each to his own.

HB,its possible to get Bad fuel in America,If it happens the stock setup will NOT stop it,I have pounded on this everywhere on the Net, Water is 20 times more likely then solid material to damage or cause injection failure,I will never understand why owners add chemicals to their fuel,I am not against adding small amounts of 2 cycle 150-1.

MN has been adding alcohol to gas for over 15 years 10%,I see people buying Heat even at present and adding it to their gas,People are that stupid (or Not informed or trained),its already 10% 50 times more then necessary to stop gas line freeze.

FYI, it was the Spiceland, Indiana Flying J that provided me well over a gallon of water with my fuel purchase... I drained my FASS filter about every ten miles after fueling there, and got about half a liter of water out each time... did that for over 100 miles. At that time, I was a running about 85% of my fuel from Flying Js too... not so much afterwords. So don't think that Flying Js are immune... bad fuel can happen anytime and anywhere.

I have placed over 100k on the clock since that time... and haven't seen more than a teaspoon of water at any one time (clear water separator) and I currently fuel at any station that sells diesel where ever I need fuel.

So what would everyone recommend for fuel filtration? I am out of the loop I though Fass was just a high performance lift pump not a filtering system. I looked at the Glacier Diesel Kit. I guess I need a little hand holding to figure this out:confused:.

With several trucks and Fords before the Dodges we found that a primary 10 micron and a secondary 2 micron would protect the Fords and their injectors... so we've done the same on the Dodges, changing those filters once a year... usually somewhere around 30K 40K miles...

All of our trucks run extra tanks that run the fuel into the primary tank...

We also treat the fuel, as we might leave 50*F weather and drive one of them into -5*F weather with no defense against gelling... .

We had a Freightliner gel up, something we never want to go through again...

Hope this helps...

If Buying Clear#2 thats NOT treated or blended to -0 temps You will need to add anti-gelling products when warranted. Its chemicals that claim to add life or mileage I don't use. Fass & Airdog make good Pumps just add the correct filter head with correct filter, their filters are rock catchers. Do a search lots of good info.

I am lucky we live in a dry climate and have never drained water out of a filter. I do have a FASS on my truck for better 3mic filtration and a larger fuel/water separator. I usually fill up at home where our fuel runs through a 10mic filter. I add an additive for a little more lubricity and some detergent to keep stuff clean. The additive is ~4 cents/ US gal a little cheaper than Stanadyne's fuel conditioner. I haven't changed my fuel filters since I put on my FASS, only 30,000 miles on them. I have saved some time and money on filter changes. I plan on having my truck a while too and bought it without warranty. I believe that the FASS was a good investment for me. We have 4 FASS on trucks and one tractor and have had good luck with them.

As was previously noted, water is probably the biggest concern for the CRD and the OE filter is supposed to remove (most) water.

The true FASS has two filters, they also make a stand-alone pump without filters.
