Hello TDR members, I am a new member and this is my first post on the site. I joined the TDR because I was amazed at the amount of information and knowledge that is available from the members of these forums. I do my own routine maintenance and some minor mods. I have been reading the posts for a few years now and have picked up a lot good information here that has saved me a lot of grief when working on my truck.

I recently had a brake line failure on my '91. 5 due to rust and I am in the process of replacing all of the steel brake lines and hoses. I intend to bypass the ABS module and disable the controller after reading the advice from the members here.

I removed the fuel tank today in order to replace the brake line behind the tank. When I removed the tank, I discovered that the steel supply and return fuel lines are also rusted and decide to replace those also.

On the top of the fuel tank module are two fittings - the supply line fitting is plastic and is a quick disconnect type fitting that appears to be in good condition. However, the return line fitting is metal and is rusted beyond recognition. My question is - is the return fitting available from Mopar or another source? If not, is there a suitable aftermarket replacement?

Looking forward to any advice.

Thanks,

Jim

Welcome to TDR! If there is a junkyard near you, go and look for a piece from a later model. I have a '92 and my fittings are all plastic, and plastic lines. I've never seen an older one up close, are the fittings in an insert? Mine has inserts where the lines, electrical plug, and vent are installed in the module with a grommet. If yours is like this, maybe you can just swap the insert for a later one. Maybe a gasser is even the same here.

Good luck!

Pete,

Thanks for the reply. I have attached (I hope) a picture of the module. The lines are attached to the module fittings with about six inches of rubber hose that attaches to the steel lines. The steel lines run along the frame to a point just above the brake proportioning valve, where they transtition back to rubber.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, you're in luck! Pull one of those off, go to the junkyard and get some plastic ones. They are the same for a caravan, jeep, and gasser trucks. You have to watch the size, either 1/4 or 5/16. The new ones have a square hole on each side for the clip to release, but should hook right up. You may need to get new clips for them.

I ran to the garage to take a pic of one, but i couldn't find it on my bench.

You can get new ones at the auto parts too, I saw them at my local Carquest when I was working on my '97. They looked the same as yours.

On edit,

To remove the rusty one, it looks like you just need to push the plastic piece on the end in to release it. Just push the fitting "on" push clip in, and pull.

Pete,

Excellent advice! I sprayed it with PB Blaster and pushed on the plastic sleeve with a screwdriver and it slid right off.

I will try to find a plastic replacement.

Thanks again,

Jim
