Truck stalled out on me yesterday while up in vermont mountains. it was around 7 degrees. truck was siting for two days with about 3/8 of a tank. i double dosed it with standadyne treatment. when i went to run it, she ran for about 10 min. then started stalling out. i'm running fass pump, and kept cycling it to evetually get fuel flowing. took about 20-30 cycles and stalling out to finally get it running. then got to a fuel station that said it runs 50% kerosene in diesel. after filling with that and an overdose of treatment. she was fine.

my question for you guys is: what is best treatment to run to avoid this in the future? this was not a fun experience. especially when my buddy has to tow me into fuel station with his gas gmc 1500 #@$%!

thank god for that! i almost had to ride snowmobile home!

JCockerill,

WHOA!!!!!!!

50% Kero? I hope not. I lived in Iron Mountain, MI for 3 years, (!00 miles North of Greenbay WI), and knew a LOT of loggers/truckers. The most I heard of was about 1 gallon of gas or 4 gallons of Kero/100 gallons of diesel. 50% kero is just begging to burn out your high pressure pump... . careful!!!!

I am in VT, it was 26 BELOW here this morning. I keep the truck plugged in at night but was very pleasantly surprised this morning when the truck cycled the preheater once than started right up the same as if it was 26 above.

The other thing I do, I started getting my fuel from a local fuel/oil company that primarily sells to local businesses that run diesel trucks. They store their diesel in above ground tanks which eleviates moisture in the fuel and they add their own fuel/anti-gel additives. Their fuel even smells better than the others. It costs me a little more, but I know I am getting good fuel.

These engines will not function with gasoline added to diesel to blend the fuel... the gasoline will take ULSD and create lubrication problems in the pump... .

After having a lot of these trucks and driving into -30 in Canada here is what we've learned over the past 15 years.....

Canada by law has to always blend fuel so never worry about fuel in Canada...

I used to use 1500 gal a month... . here's what I've learned...

Fuel in the US is never blended down unless the local distribution has enough waring to do so... He sees a long range forecast or knows that he'll have issues all winter so he does it all the time... .

Never believe what anyone in the station tells you... we use one of 3 different chemicals and we use them the year around so all my guys are always in the habit of using them... We follow label instructions... we buy a very high ratio product that runs $175 a 5 gal pail as I remember but 8 oz of treatment takes care of 100 gal of fuel. . so 1 qt treats 400 gallons... . All my trucks have extra tanks and we try and add new fuel 100 gal's at a time... In the winter this product will blend down the fuel and add to the cetane number as well as add extra lubricity to the fuel... something that I think ULSD needs... the rest of the year it just adds to the cetane rating and adds to the lubrication. .

I don't agree with Eddie, years ago, adding gasoline or Kerosene worked in older engines but these modern engines just can't take it... . especially with 2-4 injections per power stroke... . and I agree with trombley... Always when possible buy from someone you know and can trust even if it costs you more... I really like name brand card locks where each pump has the 8" dia x 20 long filter at the hose... . and really like them when they write on the filter the date of installation... . it shows me that they follow a change out program.....

My closest station sells less than 5K gal a month... so I avoid them and go into the local ag dealer who sells 200K gal a month... fresh, clean. .

BTW - I've had two gel up... over 15 years ago in -35* weather... . what a bit** and I'll never let it happen again... .

Jim,

I was just relaying what the truckers in UP of MI did. I agree with you, and only bought fuel from a trucking firm that kept a fleet running with 0 down time. My truck never gelled up, but my Kubota did... .

I still think 50% kero is waaaaay too much!

Yesterday it was about -20 here in upstate ny. I add Diesel kleen to my tank every fill up and never had a problem. When I started my truck yesterday morning it sounded aweful but after she was running a good 20 min with high idle she was fine. I didn't even plug her in the nite before!

I run Power Service White Bottle from November to May. December to March I double dose. I do not trust anyone to properly treat the fuel they sell. I was running yesterday morning at 33 below with no issues whatsoever. Costs a little more to do you own treatment, but I sleep well.

Same here. Don't double-dose though.

Please read the bottles of Power Service Diesel Kleen (no anti gell properties) and Power Service Diesel Additive (anti gell formula). Usine either in a double dose will raise the Cetane rating. I forget the raise, If I remember correctly its 2 or 4 points. In fact, I called Power Tech Support a few years ago regarding the double dose. Their reply was the double dose cost will offset its self in better MPG and performance. Even in the summer, I run Power Service Diesel Kleen, double dose in all my trucks.

Good to know, Thanks!!!

i run the power service white bottle at the recomended dose every tank without fail. never had a gelling problem and gained a consistant 2mpg.

Here in Minnesota our winter blend from the refinery is about 70% no. 2, 30% no. 1 diesel. I have never had a fuel related problem down to -35 below. I do use Power Service occasionally to clean injectors. Try to buy your fuel from truck stops or stations that sell a high volume of fuel to keep the chances of contamination and condensation low.

I live in Wyoming and should know better but I let the 30 below sneak up on me and I had jelling/starting problems. I pulled the top off the fuel filter (5. 9l) and siphoned out about a half cup of fuel and replaced it with Power Service 911. I then dumped the rest of the bottle in my fuel tank along with another bottle. Cycled it a coulpe times and it started right up and ran like it was summer! I run the same thing as WM-300 outlines above (usually - when I don't forget and the cold sneaks up on me). I don't trust the fuel stations to run the right mix, especially when traveling.

I buy all my fuel for the truck and our VW Jetta TDI at a dealer that distributes to local stations. All the schools buses and local truckers fill up here so it ia always a fresh supply and properly treated. Pumps are automated so I have a tag. They send the bill once a month. Very convenient for me. :)

I do read the bottle. 11oz Power Service "stacked" w/ 6. 5oz of Amsoil Cetane Boost per 35 gals. Amsoil product claims it will raise cetane up to 7 points. Hence the reason for not double-dosing.

Had a trucker long ago tell me to add Disel additive BEFORE filling tank not after. Have a tendency to think it does make a difference.
