I recently spent some serious down time in the backcountry of Montana trying to figure out why my truck wouldn't start. Turned out to be a simple problem with the fuel shut-off solenoid relay. But when looking for the problem I also found that the wires going to the fuel temperature sensor on the housing just above the fuel heater were totally burned up at the housing connection. It appears that the fuel heater has probably been out of commission for quite some time because the fuel temperature sensor was toasted.
My question, has anyone else had a similar problem? Any thoughts as to the cause? Only the wires right at the connection to the sensor are burned. The fix appears to be to replace the fuel heater/fuel screen unit altogether (+/-$245. 00) because my local dealer doesn't list just the sensor itself (although the housing for the wire connections and switch is attached to the unit with two allen screws so obviously it can be removed separately). It doesn't seem to be an urgent problem and the truck both started and ran well through this winters low of -31 F. But I hate to leave it hanging!
