I recently spent some serious down time in the backcountry of Montana trying to figure out why my truck wouldn't start. Turned out to be a simple problem with the fuel shut-off solenoid relay. But when looking for the problem I also found that the wires going to the fuel temperature sensor on the housing just above the fuel heater were totally burned up at the housing connection. It appears that the fuel heater has probably been out of commission for quite some time because the fuel temperature sensor was toasted.

My question, has anyone else had a similar problem? Any thoughts as to the cause? Only the wires right at the connection to the sensor are burned. The fix appears to be to replace the fuel heater/fuel screen unit altogether (+/-$245. 00) because my local dealer doesn't list just the sensor itself (although the housing for the wire connections and switch is attached to the unit with two allen screws so obviously it can be removed separately). It doesn't seem to be an urgent problem and the truck both started and ran well through this winters low of -31 F. But I hate to leave it hanging!

This seems to be relatively common. I remember there was a source for them a while that someone posted and they were right around $100. I see if I can dig it up for you later.

That assembly is made by fleetguard. Go to their website (fleetguard.com) and you can tickle out the part number. You can also call the 1-800 number and have them find it for you. I called them and they were real helpful. With that info go to whoever they say is the local dealer and get the part.

I tired just to find the harness for the fuel heater. Thought I found it, was not it. Got put on a conference call @ fleetguard. Heard everybody going thru books and stuff. No luck.

Mine too doesn't work but being in CA only a small part of the year do I care.

I got a list of engine specs off dodgeram.org

There is a part # Fleetguard 3843722-S

Cost was $48 dollars according to Cummins West a while back but they couldn't give me a good description.

Just called Fleetguard 180022filter (website doesn't find it)

She looked it up by that number and said "thermostat with cord?" I said I think so and had her fax the quote and info to cummins west I will check on it tommorow.

Was that the # that you had before?

Thanks for all the responses. I checked out that FleetGuard part number on their website and think I'll try to have one ordered. It sounds like what I'm looking for.
