We received a bulletin here at work describing the fuel transfer pump running changes made by Cummins for engines with the High Pressure Common Rail Fuel Injection Systems, i. e, 3rd Generation. This pump is a 12V pump operated by the engine control module (ECM) and attached to the rear of the filter housing. When the engine is running, the pump has a 100% duty cycle, maximum of 5 amps, and a pressure rating of 9. 5-11. 5 psi. Minimum flow is 420ml in 10 seconds, using a DRB to actuate the pump. Maximum restriction is 6" Hg.

When the key is first turned on, (without cranking the engine), the pump will run for approximately 1/2 second then shut off. If the starter is bumped and the key is left on without the engine running, the pump will also run for about 25 seconds. If the engine quits with the key on, the pump should stop immediately.

The change that Cummins made pertains to the pump and the connection of the supply line to the transfer pump. The original pumps had a rigid, non-removable line on the inlet. If you replaced the pump, you would have to remove the line with the pump. The new style pump has a flexible rubber hose with a clamp type connection on the inlet side of the pump. When replacing the old style pump with the non-removable line, you must also obtain the supply line.

Here are the pump numbers that are replaced by New pump 4089602 and New supply line 3969705: (all Cummins Part Numbers)

Original # 3957922 or 3964848

Hope this is helpful!

gtobey,

Thanks for the information but I don't see anything about improving the pump to prevent failures. Did they mention any improvements? Mine just went out and I'm thinking about what I want to do to make it more reliable.
