Funky Shifting

Here's my problem: I'm driving in overdrive and the speedo will drop to 0 then the trans will down shift out of O. D. Now sometimes this happens for a sec. then it shifts back up and every things o. k. But other times it will remain stuck that way for a couple of minutes. This is a real pain on the highway considering the top speed of my basically stock truck without O. D. My first and only thought was the T. P. S. so I bought a new one from Dodge for 195$ this seemed to cure the problem for a day then she went back to her old tricks again. I also checked the fluid level in the trans and it was fine.

I think on your truck the speed sensor is at the transmission where the cable drive used to be, sounds like it is working intermittenly. bg

I agree with B. G. Smith. It sure sounds like the speed sensor. It is mounted on the left side of the transfer case. It has two wires hooked to it. Mine cost about $60 at the Chrysler dealer last summer. Sorry I don't have the part number. This is a fairly common problem on the W series with 4 speed autos. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick responses. I called my local crysler dealer and he wasn't exactly sure if what he found was it but he said it had a number of 3920360 stamped on it for 87. 50$, does this sound right?

I think the dealer might call this a distance sensor. I think it is a bit expensive. I have the part number at home burried in a pile of receipts. Doesn't help right now, sorry.

before you buy the sensor you might go under and unplug the sensor and check the connection, if there is any corrosion you might be able to just clean it up, use a dielectric grease when putting it back togethor.

I had exactly the same problem. I also did the clean up and dielectric grease on all my connections, not just the speed sensor.

However, it turned out that the speed sensor was faulty and once I replaced that, it's been good.

You should mark the assemble prior to removal. Also when you go to do this, pull the entire assembly from the OD unit and check that the square end shaft is not rounded off and it still drives the adaptor gear properly. If that is ok, put the drive assembly back in and hook up a sensor in the same position as the old one.

When you do it, use the dielectric grease on the elect. coupling to reduce contamination.
