On a quiet night

diesel facts

A friend stopped buy today and told me about a "great" ride he had in a hopped up Hummer. He is a wrench-head but only of the gasser variety and he is rather intelligent so I don't think he would screw up the numbers he was told. The Hummer was supposedly had a modified GM6. 5 diesel. Engine mods included twin turbos, a "special" set of $1500 headers, and a few other little things. He was impressed because he was told it produces 400HP. I didn't want to burst his bubble becuase he was still rather excited about his ride, all I said was he didn't want to know how many HP a twin turbo, warmed over Cummins could produce. He has been a GM guy his entire life, so there is no way I could convince him the 6. 5's best, and most reliable, use is as a boat anchor.

I just had to tell somebody that could find the humor in this too.

That's a good one, even more amazing is that is still runs. A friend of mine has two 6. 5 truck and love chevy. The newest truck broke the crank in the first week he had it(typical harmonic balance failure). Why bother, I tend to stay out of the ford vs. chevy vs. dodge crap, but this engine is just too funny. The best part is our country asks our finest to go to battle in hummers powered with these things #ad

NO DOUBT! I was telling my wife the other day that I couldn't believe that with the price they get on the Hummers they come with that total boat anchor of a motor! Of course what's really bad is the point made above, that our military guys are sent into battle in a vehicle with an engine that I wouldn't trust to pull my travel trailer.

Somehow I can sure find the "Proud" Chevy diesel owners. I talked with a guy today at a performance Chevy diesel shop (nice guy and he does great 4" exhaust work, so he'll be installing mine, anyway) and he was talking about how their twin turbo 6. 5 dynoed at 640lbs of torque. Then he told me his "turned up" 6. 5 is putting out 260 hp, and he was talking like that was just a ton of power.

WOW huh? I don't know why these people don't open up their eyes. 640lbs of torque with twin turbos. What a joke.

Suppose I can't talk. I'm stock for now, but I have to go talk with this guy after my injectors and delivery valves.

I've gotta find some Cummins owners in town who really have a concept of power.

Once again, I just had to tell somebody.

Cooker,
Go spend some time at the Chevy site, you will crack up!
They will brag about opening up the exhaust and getting 10. 5 pounds of boost!

HOLY COW!! Sell the farm and slop the chickens! How can our teeny weeny 360 6 compete with that! #ad

As soon as you mention any thing, they will say" Well if I had a 505 BBC w/ blower/nitrous/ and alchol, I can beat you.

LOL Sure they could, from gas station to gas station... #ad

Whaddya think, is 4 MPG stretching it? #ad
#ad

I learned my lesson about BB anything when I had an 89 F-250 4x4 with a 460. Pulled great but got 9 MPG unloaded and 7 loaded.

Nope, no other way to go but diesel for me and the CTD wins hands down. #ad

I am not sure how a twin turbo set up would benefit a 6. 5 when just a single turbo set up is more than enough to blow the bottom out.

Had this younger customer of mine in the store the other day blowing about how he was going to put a blower on his 6. 9 Ford and do all this other stuff and how bad it was going to be. After he finished I basically said that when he was all finished, "Just bring it. " #ad
What makes me a really bad person, is on the way home I was thinking how funny it would be if the guy really did sink all that money into his truck and then I got to spank him with about $500 worth of mods to mine #ad
I'm soo ashamed. #ad

I have a neighbor with a tricked out 6. 5 in a 1 ton crew cab 2WD Chev which runs very well with no drugs. He has raced several BOMBd Fords and beat every one. It has more power than any truck which had been on West Valley Dodge's dyno. It's not very reliable, though. Hard starting, and keeps cracking the heads.

Is it anything like that 6. 5 built by that guy on the chevy page?
You know the 300 horse 6. 5 that turned like 205 horses on the dyno because there wasn't a fan in front to simulate ram air.
Bottom line: the 6. 5 is trash.
Ever drive one?
Tested a 95 sierra with that "contraption" in it, you press the accelarator, it just makes more noise and doesn't go anywhere. That engine always sounds broken to me.

GM would have been better off dropping a "true" Detroit Diesel like a 353T in their trucks. Although this has it's own set of operating characteristics #ad
, at least they would have had a loyal following and a reliable powerplant.

`Though my own ride is a `96 D/C, I use a 1998 Chevy 6. 5 at work to tow a 3 ton equipment trailer. So far, the Chevvvy has been just OK. It was the low bid truck. At 18,500, it blew apart one of the engine oil cooler line connectors, stranding us 15 miles east of Nothing, Arizona. (There really is such a place. ) What usage causes the 6. 5 crank to break? Lugging? Over-revving? Dirty oil? Luck of the draw Chevy-ness?

Thx. Matt in AZ

Rod chunking on the 6. 5 isn't a question of "if" but "when". I had one #ad
Traded it in on my 2wd Ram #ad
The truck was a standard and geared pretty low. Believe it or not, I have to admit it ran pretty good. When I got rid of it however, it had gotten to where when you pulled something with it and hit a hill, you could watch the temp gauge race up and peg #ad
I didn't feel like finding out if it was a blown headgasket or cracked head. Every customer I have with a 6. 5 had chunked a rod in at least one motor. No thanks, I'll stick with something reliable. If I want to drive a timebomb, I'll join "Islamic Jihad" or something #ad

TIMEBOMB! LMAO!

Maybe it is Time To BOMB?

The 6. 5 does have a small following as the 6. 2 as well. A friend of mine runs nothing but GM diesels for the simple reason, he does not tow anything and they are economical to purchase.

He will be the first to admit that they are throw away engines. The 6. 2 and 6. 5 kind of represent everthing a diesel should not be.
